Kaberle buyout

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 7 min

Knock me over with a feather, but MTL has officially notified Tomas Kaberle that the dman will be MTL's second and final compliance buyout.

Not sure I agree with this. I would have much rather have used a regular buyout and saved the compliance buyout for next offseason, considering we have certain players with long term contracts that had really poor years.

I don't understand using the compliance buyout for a player with only one year left on his contract.

I tend to agree with this.

Especially in the case of DD. If he were to under perform next season, I would have liked to see the buyout used on him.

Unless we have plans to actually utilize the cap space we will gain

Kaberle acted like a professional and was a good teammate despite not getting to play most of the year, wishing him the best.

Hope you dont mind if I intrude....

Kaberle seems to have lost the will to play hockey after leaving Toronto. What a shame. He played well for us right up until the end.

Yeah, kind of unfortunate considering his last few years in Toronto were plagued with trade rumors and interest from other teams.

Yep I think that's what it is, I think the skill is still there but the will isn't

Not only DD. Travis Moen has 3 more years left on his contract (2 after next season). And yes, even Josh Gorges who has 5 years left on his contract (4 after next season), has had a couple of difficult years.

Good. Hopefully Bergevin will use the cap room to make a few good moves.

No surprise. It gives us cap room in a year we need cap room more. There are no other players who are better options or that we can reasonably predict will be next year. Kaberle has been bubble-wrapped for months, so everybody knew this was coming.

Hopefully this helps us to somehow get one of Bickell, Clarkson or Ryan.

Which other contracts were buyout eligible?

Just cuz Kaberle was essentially expiring.

Are all those contracts butout eligible though? Don;t they have to have been signed before the new agreement?

Exactly! Poor decision unless he plans to use the cap space to obtain elite talent!

Agree with the first two, but common I agree gorges had an underwhelming year, but he has been our most stable guy on the backend during the past couple of years. He is not going to be bought out any time soon I can guarantee that one.

We should've kept Spacko instead of that dumb trade. Glad our story with Kaberle is over.

apparently you can buy any player out but compliance buyout means you can get away with without cap hit.

It can't be. The compliance buyout is only available in the case of contracts already signed before the lockout. Moen and Gorges would be eligible, DD's is not not.

But Moen and Gorges are tradeable, so there is not much perceived need for a compliance buyout.
