sure the companies are rivals but i don't see how the franchises are rivals. hasn't, Ellison has been consistently denied in his attempts to buy the dubs? didn't Cohen refuse to sell to him out of spite? how can you have a rivalry between a whole sports franchise on one hand (the Sharkies) and a mere building (Oracle Arena)? if Ellison actually owned the dubs and not just the naming rights on where they play, then i could buy into this narrative.

The Sharks must not lose money sounds like buyouts and front loaded contracts are still not on the menu.

If Jumbo, Patty, Boiler and Pavs needed any more motivation to play well this contract year, there it is.

this interview shows hes trying to make the franchise profitable. not all this craziness that he doesnt care that its underwater. money is definitely on his and the city's mind. which is fine. they need to boost the media section, tv rights etc. we get crap for coverage nationally.

I'm probably wrong but it sounds like Plattner wants to make SJ a team which focuses on making a profit. Not winning. Wonderful.

It's inevitable if what we've been told about the franchise breaking even/losing money most years is true.

It sounds like he is referencing the revamp of the business side that took place with all of those firings. He then sounds like he is saying it will be business as usual on the ice by saying the fans should not suffer.

I don't get doom and gloom from this. I get an owner that saw fixable problems, and bought shares so he was in more control of how to fix it. I don't know what else he could be referencing with "we tried to fix it."

SAP and Oracle are rivals in what they do.

About as direct a competition as you will find, as those two companies probably have 90% market share of the ERP market with larger corporates.

Yea...I don't know where you're getting that from.

Sounds like he's all about winning but the franchise still needs to break even ideally and that's probably why he had business ops revamped.

If that's the case we need Ellison to buy an NHL team. Plattner apparently hates him and doesn't want to lose to him.

Ellison is a giant dbag. I know folks that know him personally, and he's even more of a sociopath than Jobs was.

Most guys who have the money to buy a professional sports team have acquired their wealth through making smart business decisions, so I can understand them not wanting to be in a situation where they're losing money or struggling to break even.

That being said, I always thought that it was well known that you don't get into this business with the intention of making money.

I don't quite understand how they could be struggling to make money though. The arena is packed every game and they have gone relatively deep in the playoffs for 7 years now? Is it the lack of TV contracts/advertising revenue?

Plattner basically said ticket prices are going up soon. The Sharks i think are in the bottom half of the league as far as ticket prices in the NHL.

Yah, she worked for Next back in the day and worked for Sun when they were bought out by Oracle. She's met both of them (she's a director).

She works for Hitachi now, makes like a quarter million a year, and drives me completely insane because she's not intelligent but makes like 4 times what I make. But hey, at least she gets us box seats once a year to Sharks games (Hitachi owns a box).

She knows, they do not have a good relationship. Her mom is an insufferable narcissist.
