Poile named GM USA Hockey 2014 Olympic Team

I wonder how much it's going to hurt to pick the traitor for the first D-pairing?

He will still pick him. It will hurt, but Poile is a professional. I don't know how much say he has in captaincies, but if he decides, that may be a different story.

This is a nice reminder that Poile, for all his faults, is a well respected figure around the hockey world.

Is he going to wait for the players to contact him to play for the team?

Gotta be awkward picking Suter for the team.

Congrats Poile. There are some haters, but I love him. I met him at the Bridge once wandering around the upper concourse; really nice guy.

I'd love to see DP bring home the gold. Interested to see what he does with a gigantic pool of offensive talent as opposed to building a defensive squad. Maybe we'll see a team like the Kariya-era Preds that scored a bunch of goals

I think Poile will stick to the formula Burke brought in. Build a team with highly skilled players along with good role players. Essentially, build a team that will play as a very good team rather than build an all-star team.

Poile is very good at that.

Kind of have to since the US doesn't have the top end talent like the Canadians do. I hear what you're saying but it's based out of necessity as opposed to making an all-star team. Honestly, the US held their own against Canada in the last games so it should be interesting to watch again.

The talent on the 2010 US Olympic Hockey team was certainly nothing to sneeze at and I think it will only be better for the 2014 US team.

Still no guarantee the NHL players go Hockey Canada and the PA have no agreement in place. The PA wants the IOC to cover player insurance costs so teams and Hockey Canada USA Hockey don't have to. I mean I think it was shown that the insurance cost for Canadas top 5 players was going to be over 700K.

One of the biggest hurdles here.

And both the players and owners wanted to make sure they, their families and guests were given better treatment than in previous years. This is especially important because hotels and other amenities are much more limited in Sochi than they were in Vancouver in 2010, or even Salt Lake City in 2002. The sides want it spelled out in the agreement that the IOC will provide proper hotel rooms, transportation, access to Olympic venues and some meals for their families and other guests at the Games.

Yeah he's not gonna build an all-star team, he's definitely gonna have his Ryan Callahans maybe a Rob Scuderi here and there, guys that can play a 4th line or defensive role (although Callahan is a scorer on a shallower roster). But they're gonna be able to score too, it's a very exciting opportunity for DP.
