New England prospects for 2013 draft

Didn't see anywhere to talk New England kids for the draft, so I thought I'd make a topic. Better late than never

Don't think there are any first rounders in this class but it's a fairly deep group regardless. Here is my top 30 to get the discussion going, covering EJHL and New England prep/HS:

1. Ryan Fitzgerald, C, Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL)
2. Brian Pinho, C, St. John’s
3. Zach Sanford, C, Middlesex Islanders (EJHL)
4. Wiley Sherman, D, Hotchkiss
5. Anthony Florentino, D, South Kent Selects
6. Jason Salvaggio, LW, South Kent Selects
7. Thomas Aldworth, RW, Cushing
8. Will Toffey, D, Salisbury
9. Shane Kavanagh, C, Cushing
10. Miles Wood, RW, Nobles

11. Ryan Segalla, D, Salisbury
12. Tyler Hill, LW, Hotchkiss/Chicago (USHL)
13. Nick Hutchison, C, Avon Old Farms
14. Connor Light, D, Phillips Andover
15. Quin Pompi, D, Berkshire
16. Daniel Lafontaine, C, Avon Old Farms
17. Tyler Wood, D, Nobles [‘94]
18. Eddie Ellis, C, Phillips Andover
----- projected draft cutoff ------
19. David Hallisey, RW, Westminster ['94]
20. Nolan Vesey, LW, Austin Prep

21. Connor Brassard, D, Cushing
22. Dakota Ford, D, Middlesex Islanders (EJHL)
23. Ryan Cloonan, C, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)
24. Terrance Amorosa, D, Holderness
25. Mason Krueger, LW, Avon Old Farms
26. Richie Boyd, D, Cushing
27. Mitchell Allen, C, Kent
28. Michael Laffin, LW, NY Apple Core (EJHL)
29. Frankie Vatrano, LW, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL) ['94]
30. Jason Stephanik, RW, Jersey Hitmen (EJHL) ['94]

HMs:
Mario Benicky, LW, Westminster
Joshua Couturier, D, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)
Logan Day, D, Kents Hill
Vincent Gisonti, C, Westminster [Late ‘93]
Will Golonka, RW, Belmont Hill
Alex Gonye, LW, Deerfield ['94]
Ethan Holdaway, LW, Wesminster [‘94]
Michael Kim, D, Phillips Andover
Sean Orlando, C, Westminster
Brandon Shea, C, South Shore Kings
Devin Tringale, LW, Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL) [Late '93]

1. Ryan Fitzgerald, C, Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL)
2. Brian Pinho, C, St. John’s (Should be lower, had a rough season)
3. Zach Sanford, C, Middlesex Islanders (EJHL)
4. Wiley Sherman, D, Hotchkiss
5. Anthony Florentino, D, South Kent Selects (2nd best chance of playing in the NHL behind Fitzgerald)
6. Jason Salvaggio, LW, South Kent Selects
7. Thomas Aldworth, RW, Cushing
8. Will Toffey, D, Salisbury
9. Shane Kavanagh, C, Cushing
10. Miles Wood, RW, Nobles

11. Ryan Segalla, D, Salisbury
12. Tyler Hill, LW, Hotchkiss/Chicago (USHL) (Unless something changes in his game over the next few years he won't even be an impact D1 player. Too many holes in his game)
13. Nick Hutchison, C, Avon Old Farms (Poor skater, hit or miss attitude, and down right invisible too often)
14. Connor Light, D, Phillips Andover
15. Quin Pompi, D, Berkshire
16. Daniel Lafontaine, C, Avon Old Farms (Has NHL potential hockey IQ, but nothing else really grabs your attention when he plays)
17. Tyler Wood, D, Nobles [‘94]
18. Eddie Ellis, C, Phillips Andover (Better skater than Hutchinson, but all of the other problems seem to be there. Hangs out on the perimeter too often, and mis-times his attack into seams)
----- projected draft cutoff ------
19. David Hallisey, RW, Westminster ['94]
20. Nolan Vesey, LW, Austin Prep

21. Connor Brassard, D, Cushing
22. Dakota Ford, D, Middlesex Islanders (EJHL)
23. Ryan Cloonan, C, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)
24. Terrance Amorosa, D, Holderness
25. Mason Krueger, LW, Avon Old Farms
26. Richie Boyd, D, Cushing
27. Mitchell Allen, C, Kent
28. Michael Laffin, LW, NY Apple Core (EJHL)
29. Frankie Vatrano, LW, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL) ['94]
30. Jason Stephanik, RW, Jersey Hitmen (EJHL) ['94]

Ethan Holdaway, LW, Wesminster [‘94]
Michael Kim, D, Phillips Andover

Brandon Shea, C, South Shore Kings
Devin Tringale, LW, Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL) [Late '93][/QUOTE]

This 95' birth year looked pretty good when they were 10-13, especially when Adam Erne was playing in the area. But a lot of these kids never developed. 6 of these kids all played on the same youth hockey team (and the 2 best players at the time aren't even on this list).

Look for the 2015 class to be the stand out class for New England.

Pretty good list overall. A few kids could move up or down slightly, but I agree with the general placement of all of the kids.

Cheers. This group is a lot stronger with Hayden and Erne, to be sure. I'm looking forward to the 2015 class, especially now that it looks like Eichel is staying in the area. 2014 looks brutal. JD Dudek, Ara Nazarian, Willy Smith, Tyler Bird, and Alex Esposito are the kids who jumped out at me. Haralds Egle looks like he's going USHL and I like the Smith twins but I don't know if they're pro prospects. Not much to get excited about.

Yeah add Hayden to that list along side Erne and you have a solid group of players. The 96's in NE are going to be good college players, but nothing jumps out as far as high end pro potential.

One name to keep an eye are on is James Winkler. He has the size to potentially play in the NHL.

2013 and 2015 are the two strongest years, at least as far as youth hockey goes around here. Look for another good push in the 2018 draft, there are some strong 2000's out there in this area.

Zach Sanford will be the best player out of this group, I also believe he will be one of the best American players taken from this draft. Late bloomer but the sky is the limit for this kid...huge riser!

Some random thoughts...

1. Ryan Fitzgerald, C, Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL)- Undersized, but he's got a terrific IQ and is competitive.
2. Brian Pinho, C, St. John’s
3. Zach Sanford, C, Middlesex Islanders (EJHL)
4. Wiley Sherman, D, Hotchkiss- Raw, but he's got a lot of upside. He's huge, has quick feet, moves the puck and plays physical.
5. Anthony Florentino, D, South Kent Selects
6. Jason Salvaggio, LW, South Kent Selects
7. Thomas Aldworth, RW, Cushing
8. Will Toffey, D, Salisbury
9. Shane Kavanagh, C, Cushing
10. Miles Wood, RW, Nobles

11. Ryan Segalla, D, Salisbury- Warrior. Winner. Leader.
12. Tyler Hill, LW, Hotchkiss/Chicago (USHL)- He already looks like a pro, tall and heavy and packs a ROCKET of a wrister. I've seen Hill dominate the game on one shift and then disappear for the rest of the game (tournament).
13. Nick Hutchison, C, Avon Old Farms
14. Connor Light, D, Phillips Andover- Big defender who plays a poised, smart game.
15. Quin Pompi, D, Berkshire
16. Daniel Lafontaine, C, Avon Old Farms- I'm not a fan. In the games I saw he was a lazy whiner. You can see he has some skill and smarts, but he did nothing to get the puck back, didn't want to pay the price to make plays and took dirty swings (with his stick) at guys who hit him (but wanted no part of an actual confrontation).
17. Tyler Wood, D, Nobles [‘94]
18. Eddie Ellis, C, Phillips Andover- I think Ellis should be higher. He's got good size, good speed, shoots it well and he plays an industrious, physical game. He's one of those 'safe picks' who can play a Dan Paille type role in the bottom-six if he doesn't pan out on a higher line.

----- projected draft cutoff ------
19. David Hallisey, RW, Westminster ['94]
20. Nolan Vesey, LW, Austin Prep

21. Connor Brassard, D, Cushing- Smart player, but he has very heavy feet and gets beat regularly by players with speed.
22. Dakota Ford, D, Middlesex Islanders (EJHL)
23. Ryan Cloonan, C, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)
24. Terrance Amorosa, D, Holderness
25. Mason Krueger, LW, Avon Old Farms
26. Richie Boyd, D, Cushing
27. Mitchell Allen, C, Kent
28. Michael Laffin, LW, NY Apple Core (EJHL)- Outstanding speed, but could use more grit and determination.
29. Frankie Vatrano, LW, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL) ['94]- Great shot, pretty average otherwise.
30. Jason Stephanik, RW, Jersey Hitmen (EJHL) ['94]- Should be higher. Big, skilled winger is a force when he has the puck but has a lot of work to do without the puck.

HMs:
Mario Benicky, LW, Westminster- Big, industrious winger played on a line with Sean Orlando and the pair just overwhelmed teams with their size, strength, speed and cycle game.
Joshua Couturier, D, Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL)- A big, rugged defenseman with quick feet who's tough to beat one on one. Progressed a lot this season. Plays with a mean streak.
Logan Day, D, Kents Hill
Vincent Gisonti, C, Westminster [Late ‘93]
Will Golonka, RW, Belmont Hill
Alex Gonye, LW, Deerfield ['94]
Ethan Holdaway, LW, Wesminster [‘94]
Michael Kim, D, Phillips Andover
Sean Orlando, C, Westminster- I'm a big fan of Sean Orlando. He's a big, fast, two-way, playmaking center who does everything and plays in all situations for Westy. He was a little snake bitten this season (I personally saw him hit at least 6 posts), but the kid plays hard, he's popular with his teammates and he makes his linemates better.
Brandon Shea, C, South Shore Kings
Devin Tringale, LW, Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL) [Late '93]- Dominant power forward at the EJHL level, but he's been less effective against better competition and loses some of his drive, and without those legs churning he can't get to the dirty areas where he's so effective.

Bill,

I agree with everything that you wrote. I haven't seen Tyler Hill enough to ever see him dominate even one shift. He does has a very heavy shot, and does look like a pro. He just doesn't seem to think the game very well, and seems to just bury his head and go to the net.

Our 2015 ('97s) year is supposedly unreal.

Both were drafted by Washington. Sanford at the end of the second and Pinho in the sixth.

Yes the 97's is a strong year in New England (Massachusetts especially), and if you're talking about the 2015 draft class you can add Jack Eichel to the mix since he's a late 96'.

Look to see Hanafin and Eichel to be taken high first round (both are possible top 10) along with Colin White somewhere in the first round.

Will be an exciting year for the area.

Miles Wood was the best 2013 draft Forward from Nobles. He played on a line with Colin White. Like most of the Nobles forwards in recent memory he is lanky, and is a pretty good skater. I don't think he has the pro upside of some of the other players from Nobles, but will definitely be an impact player at the next level.

Other recent Nobles players drafted are: Adam Gilmour, Chris Calnan, Kevin Hayes, Jimmy Hayes, Billy Arnold. Keep an eye out for two others in the 2015 draft (Colin White and Cal Burke). All of these players (minus Burke so far) have gone to play at BC.

I hear ya. The first time I saw him I thought, wow what a waste of talent/upside. But he looked so much like a pro and had that pulverizing shot that I kept watching until I finally saw a few flashes. I remember a game where he went after a dump in, buried the D with the puck, powered his way out of the corner and up to the top of the circle, toe-dragged it around the winger who was out high covering the D and then snapping off a laser that hit the cross bar and then the roof of the building. When I saw that I thought maybe he was just bored playing in the prep league, but then he didn't really seem to find his range in the USHL either.

...

As a Bruins fan, it was nice to see the B's grab Fitzgerald and Sherman. They're both going to Boston area schools (Sherman has one more year at Hotchkiss) but it should be fun to watch them develop over the next 3-5 years at BC and Harvard.
