Maybe I'm a little optimistic about his potential playing with Fowler but that's no big deal if that's not the case. He's as good a 6/7 as we're going to get.
Except that Murray has no reason to add a defenseman like, say, Coburn if he believes Lovejoy is the partner for Fowler. You don't add a player like that for 5/6 duties.

If you acknowledge that Lovejoy was good for us why won't that continue? I don't think it was any coincidence that he was great at Detroit with Cam as his partner. I'd like to see that continue.
Lovejoy and Murray admit that it won't continue.

He's paid like a third pairing defenseman. If either of them expected he could keep it up then he wouldn't be paid like that.

OK, now you have hit on the key to evaluating the signing. If BM signed Lovejoy to be a 6/7 and occasional spot duty as a #4 then it's a good deal. But if BM really thinks he just found a partner for Cam then he's dumpster diving and it's not a good signing because we now will stop looking for that partner for Cam. I guess we need to see how the off season plays out to determine that.

I know. Bad wording. I meant the Ducks franchise with "them".

I addressed that on the first page:

What has me a little nervous is what role Lovejoy is expected to play in. Does Murray see him as a 6/7 guy, or is he going to try to shoehorn him into the top 4 because he had a good playoff series?
I'm hopeful Murray has more realistic expectations for the exact reason snark brought up; which is the price tag. If Lovejoy were being paid closer to what a top 4 guy could/should make, I'd probably be terrified.

Well, I agree with your logic, but I'm not completely comfortable that BM is thinking that. A dumpster diver (and BM has done this in the past) would want to sign him like everybody else sees him (6/7) and then think he will turn lead into gold.

If he's goes out and gets a d-man like Coburn then someone gets removed from the top 4. Lovejoy is very much the 6/7 guy. But that doesn't mean pairing him with Fowler necessarily promotes him to a higher role. I'm just saying at even strength where Woods has rolled all three pairings pretty evenly. Every d-man is expected to take a regular even strength shift and Fowler and Lovejoy just worked well together. If they don't than Cam gets paired with someone else, no big deal.

I do not see how anyone could not like this deal honestly.

This was a bit surprising signing, great to have him though. He's definitely worth every penny if he plays like he played in playoffs.

I wish we wouldn't have done it personally. Not 3 years. He's a solid bottom pairing defenseman, but we need a top 4 defenseman to play with Fowler. Not bad though. He's a solid player.
