From the "take it for what it's worth" file

From Robert Esche:

just heard from robert esche
He occasionally stops in at a watering hole that I frequent. He was in last night and someone finally asked him about the lockout. His response was that a deal will be in place by July 1st. Take it for what its worth. He also said that he and some other NHLers will begin practicing at a rink in Cicero,North Syracuse. Im not sure which players live in this area, but it is some refreshing news.

Kinda goes along with the report in the paper saying that people in the NHL and NHLPA meetings thought there would be a deal in place within a month.

If they want any kind of television deal for next year, they have to get something done and fast.

There's no way to confirm or refute this rumor, especially since most people are rumoring a deal getting done this month. I suppose you could hold a candle to the statement if Esche starts practicing in Syracuse, but then again, maybe this is also a well known fact to the locals.

In either case, Esche would just be giving his semi-informed opinion and gut feeling.

I would venture to guess that once a CBA is signed that ESPN and the NHL will come up with a television agreement. Now that there is ESPN U, ESPN 2 has more free time to broadcast NHL games. However, it wouldn't shock me if the NHL doesn't appear on the flagship ESPN.

ESPN passed because it’s a business. Why resign at the same price? They’ll resign with the NHL once the league starts up again and under a new contract. They are no idiots. If the NHL wants television media coverage ESPN will pay very little to get knowing the NHL badly needs it to win back fan support. Not that the price was high to begin with but with no other interests sparked, ESPN will go with a fraction of what they paid in past years.

Really? I wonder who the player rep is for Philly in the NHLPA...

Could it be Esche? It is Esche. I think he has more of a semi-informed position...just a guess...

Hmm.... well, Tim Connolly is from Syracuse. Dustin Brown is from not too far away (Ithaca). Who else?
