Flyers talking to St. Louis About Halak

per Tim Panaccio
Quote:
According to an NHL source here at this weekend’s NHL draft, the Flyers have made some inquires with St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong about the availability of Jaroslav Halak, who lost the starter’s job to Brian Elliott this past season.
Quote:
“The Flyers have been told it’s going to take a very good player, but it won’t take one of their top guys, which Philadelphia was worried about,” the source said. “He could be their No. 1.”

Matt Read for Jaro Halak?

Always been a fan of Halak personally. If I'm St. Louis though, I'd be worried about putting it all on the shoulders of Elliot and Allen

That deal seems good in terms of value, but does St. Louis want another winger? They seem to be flush with wingers - Oshie, Perron, Tarasenko, Stewart, Schwartz, and Steen, who can play wing. Maybe this deal would allow them to trade Perron.

It's a good basis, but I'd like to see us give Mason a chance (as risky as it is). He looked very good for us this past season. Holmgren seems to like him a lot, too.

Please no, he just posted a .899sv% behind a defense stronger than the Flyers.

Why aren't the Flyers talking to Vancouver about one of their goalies, that's what I want to know

That's my thinking, get Read and move another for a center.

He struggled with with lower body injuries(groin). That can very well cause a goalie to struggle. You can't really look at stats and judge what's been going on.

Which one would you prefer they talk about

The one with the giant contract, right after Philly just bought out a goalie with a giant contract?

Or the one that Vancouver has been desperately trying to keep for the last year?

I don't know, if I'm the Blues, I wouldn't trust Elliot long term, would rather stick with Halak/Allen

Jeez, Matt Read is THE most popular and versatile asset on all of HFboards these days. I like the guy, but I didn't think he was that good to be honest. In this case, due to goalie prices always being disappointing, it's probably fair value, but the guy is already 27 years old. He's somewhat physical and has 50 point potential. Definitely a support player and not a guy whose going to get it done on his own.

I feel like I've seen his name come up in talks for Gardiner, #7 overall, Halak, Miller, as a key piece for Ryan or Letang. Matt Read, alone, is the new Ryder, Halak, 2nd.

Because they flyers don't want to get drained of assets by the overvauled Schneider and terrible contract that nobody wants Luongo.

Same. I really don't understand going with Elliot. Halak is the better goalie long term.

So than why should the Flyers give up a good asset in order to get a goalie coming off an injury troubled season who posted numbers worse than the goalie they just bought out?

If Halak is being shopped and is available reasonably cheap I'm not against it, but I wouldn't want to give up someone like Matt Read for a goalie coming off the season Halak just had who is also a UFA (though from a St Louis standpoint I understand why he's the desired return).

Ed Snider has truck loads of money. He will give his team everything it needs to win. Luongo is the best goalie available right now from a pure achievement/win now standpoint (unless Thomas is also available but even then Lou would be #2)

And for the record, I want to trade Schneider.

How about Schneider for Couturier?

Key piece for Ryan or Letang is just silly. As complimentary piece in any of those other deals, why not?

It just shows your ignorance. He's not a top player but a very good 2nd liner that can play all forward positions and all situations of the game. So what he's 27? He's still young in NHL years as he hasn't took the abuse most guys have at that age in the NHL.
