This is a bad deal for the Penguins value wise.

But everyone needs to understand something else:

Letang costs $3.5m for the 2013-14 season.

The Penguins are tight with cap space for the 2013-14 season.

The Penguins can't afford (nor do they want to) to take back Phaneuf at $6.5m next year.

If I changed phaneuf for gardiner is it still what you would call "laughably bad"?

yet another horrible Leafs offer for Letang. they managed to include Sutter to make it a super-horrible deal, too.

yes, because if you consider that Gardiner, Kulemin, and #21 would be for Letang, then you get into one of those lousy defensemen and a conditional pick for Sutter which is still bad.

No good. Pens need cap space so they would want players on Elc contracts with conditionl picks based on Letang resigning.

again: Getting Phaneuf in a deal for Letang makes no sense for the Penguins. If I need to explain why that is, you shouldn't be making proposals.

I am going to be nice here: At least you left out Malkin. Props for that part.

This deal doesn't make sense without pieces like Rielly, Gardiner, JVR + which is why it doesn't make sense.

The Leafs easily have the pieces to acquire Letang.

As a Flyer fan I would love it if the Pens did this. So, that says something about the value.

Ugh. This would never happen.

How about Rielly and our 1st, for Letang? It's closer to reality, I think. Pittsburgh would get big-time cap relief, while getting an elite prospect to replace their Norris candidate, and a pick to boot. The Leafs get one of the best D-Men in the game. There's something in it for BOTH teams.

Personally, I'd rather keep Rielly. I'm just presenting something that would be possible.
