The only buyout that shocked me was Lecavalier. Did think Tampa had the bank roll or even the desire to pay some one that much for that long when they dont play on the team anymore

Yeah, but it is cheaper than paying him to play, plus they get extra flexibility.

If Lecavalier were to get hurt this year (not unlikely, imho) and were on LTIR, they'd be unable to use a compliance buyout on him next year. I can understand the motivation to do it this year.

@DarrenDreger

It's getting interesting. 2 sources say Corey Schneider is in play. 1st and a prospect part of asking price. Suspect Oilers in on talks.

Imho, that could be a very wise move for the Oilers. Schneider is almost guaranteed to make a difference for them, and having Dubnyk in the goaltending fold makes them quite strong at that position. You know what you're getting with Schneider - you hope you get that sort of player from a 7th overall pick.

I wonder what sort of prospect they'd be looking for? Also: I assume this solves the Lou issue if this were to happen.

Looks as though Letang and the Pens are inching closer to a deal.

@RenLavoieRDS: I've been told that the Penguins and Kristopher Letang are close to a deal. Small details to resolved and contract will be official. #RDS

The Penguins will be a shining light unto the league as to how to not properly manage your cap and assets.

you would think that NHL GMs would have half a brain, pay attention to a cap league like the NBA and take notes how to manage your cap and assets. but guess some of them are too busy.

Awesome. The Pens have 1/3rd of their cap tied up with 3 players.

If you think Pavelic is overpaid (5 yrs x $3.9 million) as a .905 goalie, what do you think of Mike Smith (6 yrs x $5.667 million) as a .910 goalie? See story http://www.foxsportsarizona.com/nhl/...41&feedID=3702

4.2 million seems a bit steep for what he brings though doesn't it?

Terrible contract.

It's hilarious how bad most GMs are at evaluating goalies at NHL level.
They all know the elites and are pretty good there, but so bad with the poor-to-barely-above-average range.

My thoughts exactly. From what I'm reading from Canucks fans, he was abused under Vigneault.

A new start will probably do him wonders.

All of the Canucks fans think nobody will pick him up, so what does that tell you. He's a bottom pairing guy at best.

half of Ballards salary would be picked up by Van

If like the Meitenen pick up, Van has to pay half his remaining salary at 2.1m for us
it would be good value

also if he plays well a ala Hainsey we could move Buff or in two years when the
young core def of ours are more ready trade him like Oduya for a pick

I could be wrong, but aren't you thinking of re-entry waivers which no longer exists?
