OT Vancouver Grizzlies

Hey guys, Just wondering how you would feel if the Grizzlies returned to the nba. Do you think if managed right it could last this time? What are some of your fonder memories of the team? what were some of the low points. i think 2nd overall pick steve francis refusing to play for them was a pretty big low.
Also have any of you become raptors fans and embraced them as canada's nba team?

I'd love to see the Grizzles get a second chance - I'm sure many in the lower mainland would.

I was a very casual NBA fan and to date will only glance at the highlights rather than sit and watch a game start to finish. That said, I thought having the NBA in town was great fun. The athleticism of the players - their ability to contort, feint, make decisions and shoot, all in the second or so that they are in the air - is shocking and never got old for me.

So, that was the highlight.

The lowlight? Probably the Steve Francis draft spectacle, him weeping and clutching his hat and biting his lip in sorrow. I felt moderately defensive for Vancouver; what, are we *so* horrible? Yes it rains, but think of the weed Steve! The weed!

But there were plenty of lowlights, which were virtually ensured by the NBA's daft restrictions on the Grizz regarding cap and drafting position, to say nothing of the curious management of Stu Jackson, who seemed to want to assemble a team consisting of nothing but shooting guards.

Memphis Grizzlies recently changed ownership

Then they let go the coach that took the franchise to their first conference appearance

The Memphis Tigers (NCAA) are bigger than the Grizzlies there

Wish Vancouver could get the Memphis franchise back here.

- Well, the Grizzlies are in the NBA, Vancouver isn't.
- Yes, the attendance was there, in fact better than it's been in Memphis, and the $CDN is much closer to par rather than 65 - 70 cent territory during the late 90's / early 00's. The arena is in place, no need to build like Seattle.
- Fonder memories? Uh, starting the first season 2-0 ... We got some great visiting players come through town.
- Low points? Definitely Steve Francis. They should have just held onto him and told him to suck it up. Terrible trade too. That, and the relocation rumours for 2 seasons.
- Not really. Once the Grizzlies left, for the most part I stopped paying attention. The Raptors have been pretty terrible for a long time anyway, not much of a bandwagon to hitch on.

I'd like to see the Grizzlies back.

As long as Stu "Drive the Franchise into the Ground" Jackson is no where near the team.

Also, I'd like the team to be called the Vancouver Cougars with a logo of some gold-digging bimbo from Yaletown sitting at the bar at Rodney's.

Times have changed. I don't think that would be as much of an issue anymore.

Would love them back. If the NBA is in fact considering adding another expansion team with Seattle to make it an even 32, you can bet that Aquilini will express some interest. It makes sense considering he owns the building. He would probably need partners though. Does anyone know if he has any ties with Denis Washington? He is the billionaire Vancouver based businessman who apparently had a deal with McCaw last time around (and wanted to keep the team in Vancouver). However, McCaw used that offer as leverage to get a better deal.

No, the NBA is a joke league with selfish players. Small markets like Vancouver don't stand a chance. Even the smaller US markets (which are much larger than Vancouver) struggle to have success.

I'd like it, but only because it would be cool to see other teams coming through. I would support them I guess, but Miami would still be my team.

Way different story.

Cannot compare college to the NBA.

In a lot of places in the States, especially smaller markets, college sports are actually bigger than professional sports.

There's a reason there's 100K+ in some football stadiums.

I voted yes because I would like to see how it does if given a fair shot but I agree with this post above. Until they fix the system only a handful of teams will have success. I doubt Vancouver could make it work.

Is it a coincidence that the Canucks dark days coincided with the Grizzlies being here?

lol nvm. I just re-read the post and realized it was not NCAA.

I saw final four and immediately thought NCAA as no one really says final four when talking about basketball unless it is college.

My bad.

Anyway, it's all dependent on ownership and management.

The Vancouver franchise would always have a good ownership group because I'd assume it would be the Aquillinis and they want to win.

There's enough people who play/watch basketball in the Lower Mainland that they could easily get solid crowds on a nightly basis.

It all then depends on management which was one of the reasons the last time it failed.
