The case against europeans in the QMJHL

It is very fun to have talented euros come over and help sell tickets, but realistically the QMJHL is supposed to be a developement league for Quebec and Maritime boys and having euros take their places as go-to players is not the right idea. Also, it doesn't really matter if it helps selling tickets because teams have to pay 100,000$ and more for the rights to those players so they don't make any money at all... I bet fans will still come and see the local boys at the rink even if there's no Radulov or Grigorenko in the lineups.

They have already forbidden the drafting of european goalies, and so I do think they are going in the right direction. Up next, they will do away with europeans all together. And you know what, it will eliminate one big headache for the Q, small market vs big market.

With the Q forcing teams to draft more Americans, you might say it steals a spot from a good Quebec boy but what it really does, is force the small market teams to steal some of those Americans from Moncton, Quebec, Halifax, etc. It helps balance things out. Or else those teams have the money to really ''buy'' a winner. In the CHL import draft, small market teams can't do that because they basically HAVE to get two euros on their team, or else their team will have a huge disadvantage when the season begins. So they can't just place euros on their reserve list and when rich teams come knocking, trade them for multiple draft picks. With Americans, they can, because they draft them via the in-house draft.

It would be interesting to see someone else take the place of each euros in this league. And let the QMJHL teams go to war against the rest of the CHL with just eastern canadian players. With our own players. Maybe with a bunch of americans too, but certain states are on our territory after all, so why not? Some Quebec players do go the NCAA route, so therefore we shouldn't feel shame in getting some americans to come in like Askew. How many young Quebec boys go play in Russia as 17 yrs olds?

And while we're at it, I do think we should dissociate ourselves from the CHL, make up our own rules for our own interests. I bet we could still compete in the Memorial Cup, along with the USHL, that would be a great tournament instead of having the host team automatically make it in. Also, it is about time that the league re-names it self the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) or something like that.
