Calling Schneider a Top 5 goalie is putting some lipstick on that pig too, though. He's yet to prove he can do it with the pressure on. He wasn't any good when he was anointed the #1 to start the season and he wasn't any good with the playoffs on the line.
He was coming off an injury during the playoffs. His performance was very uncharacteristic.
As for the start of the season, he had a poor season opener and then came back to allow only 8 goals in his next 5 starts.
I am very pleased so far of both trading Schnieder and keeping Luongo and of the two first round picks we got today.
I have always preferred that we keep Luongo as our #1 goalie. I think Luongo is the higher skilled of the two. I also think Luongo is a better tutor for Lack and Eriksson.
Two years ago, and even at times as late as the lockout, Schnieder was still considered an unproven goalie that would be lucky to get a 2nd round pick in return. For Gillis to actually get a top 10 pick in return is actually fantastic. It is only fans over expecting what any goal tender will return expecting that a 9th overall pick was not enough.
I can understand that some fans would have preferred Schnieder to remain with the Canucks. They have a right to their own opinion, but trading Schnieder got us a quality return. Luongo was not going to & likely would have cost the club. Most of the problem in trading Luongo this season is due to the team' inabilit to negotiate trades during the lockout and the NHL changing the rules which made Luogo's contract far worse than what it was when it was originally negotiated. The demand by other teams for Schnieder over Luongo was over contract terms, not over skill in goal tending. What some fans have forgotten was while Cory was developing, he was expected to develop into a solid first string goalie, but Lack was (and still may be) considered that he would develop into a much better goalie than Cory. As a young first string goalie, Cory would be more concerned in developing his own skills in his new role than helping Lack or Eriksson to develop into solid NHL goalies.
Despite what MacT might have said - I think the Oilers goaltending was fairly good considering it was the blueline was that ****.
Yeah, I'd certainly agree with that characterization of their issues.
Which is more reason to believe that the offer the pundits put out there was never really on the table.
Supposedly the Oilers hadn't picked a defenseman in the first round since 1989 (haven't checked the accuracy of that but it's what I heard).
The Nurse pick was well overdue for their system. I don't see how they'd think that forgoing a good defenseman prospect in the first round of this draft, as well as adding another top forward prospect (people were suggesting some of their top young forwards) and an additional pick (the 2nd), was going to be worth whatever improvement Schneider might bring to their goaltending position.
A lot of you guys talk like Cory Schneider is a god damn veznia, conn smythe, stanley cup winning goal tender. He is one of many talented young goalies in the NHL, on any given year its one goalie rising to stardom and then falling back down to earth the next. Luongo or Schneider? who gives a ****! BOTH ARE CAPABLE OF BACK STOPPING A TEAM TO THE SAME RESULT!
Except Schneider was always near the top every year. Him along with Rask and Lundqvist are head and shoulders above the rest of the league for this reason.
As I said last night, I'm not entirely sure how someone can be stoked to be paying a declining, unhappy, 38 y/o Luongo 5.3 million but ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED of paying a 30 y/o Schneider in his prime $7 million.
Luongo's contract starts to look utterly horrible at roughly the same time Schneider would have gone onto a new deal.
Luongo's recapture money doesn't matter if we win a cup. Plus we might have Lack on a bridge contract when the time comes.
Nothing matters if Lou lives up to it for 5 more years. I think he can. We know what we have in Lou.
It's funny too. All the Schneider supporters used the "This team has no scoring, we didn't lose because of goaltending we lost because we can't buy a goal" argument after those losses. They were right too, this team couldn't buy a ****ing goal. However, for some reason today, all that gets tossed out the window and all of a sudden this team is going to decline because our goaltending won't be good enough.
