Here is a write-up:

http://www.westerncollegehockeyblog....es-moines-ushl

He will play for Des Moines in the USHL, and committed to Harvard.

Name Pos. Ht. Wt. DOB Hometown Last Team
Merrick Madsen G 6-5 177 8/2/95 Acton, Calif. Proctor Academy (NEPSIHA)

Quote:
Madsen will spend the 2013-14 season playing for the Des Moines Bucaneers in the United States Hockey League (USHL).
This article is about a year old. It is from a newspaper in California:

http://sports-theavtimes.com/actons-...harvard-bound/

Quote:
Merrick Madsen, who was born in Idaho, started on ice skates as a forward at age 5, but switched to netminding the next season when the only mite goalie aged up. He previously played for the Las Vegas Outlaws until moving to California at age 8.

Living in a rural town known for its “farm-like” atmosphere did little to slow Merrick’s hockey progress. Mom and Dad were tasked with getting Merrick to and from the nearest ice rink, which was more than 30 miles away in Valencia.

Merrick played for the Valencia Express, West Valley Wolves & the California Heat.

Flyers take Merrick Madsen 162nd overall. Nice pick, but a very raw skilled goalie for Proctor Academy. Great size but a long-term project.

His coach is impressed by Madsen's strengths, but equally boasts of his goaltender's ability to identify weaknesses and improve on them. "He's got great feet. He moves post-to-post very well. He has been working on his glove and getting better on the shots upstairs," said Walsh.

Madsen will spend the 2013-14 season playing for the Des Moines Bucaneers in the United States Hockey League (USHL). In Des Moines he will be replacing Providence recruit Nick Ellis between the pipes. Former Ferris State player Jon Rogger coaches Des Moines, but one of his assistants is Coach Walsh's friend, Devereaux, who recommended Madsen to Walsh two years ago.

We pick up an all-world shuffle-boarder this round? Or was it an Olympic class water polo player?

We love NH so much that we're putting our new farm program there.

He'll play back up to Mason next year. Flyers will sign Leighton for depth. Then Bobrovsky goes down in Columbus and Madsen gets traded to the Blue Jacekts. He then saves the season, wins Vezina and Conn Smythe and goes into lead Columbus to a Stanley cup. After that, he will want 6mil/season

Mark my words

NHL.com has him listed as the 26th ranked North American goalie.

Come on. They're just jokes.

I honestly like this pick more than our last two.

Apparently there is untapped potential in New Hampshire high schools

Just a little insight on Madsen. I've known this kid for quite a few years and he's got tons of potential. He's about 6'5 with amazing footwork for a goalie with his frame and age. He's going to des moines next year and committed to harvard. He could end up being a huge steal as a 6th if he develops properly. Enjoy!

Me too, he's a big guy and committed to Harvard for the 14-15 season already

There's definitely untapped potential in high schools, but even top players from HS are so hit and miss

I guess lol. I think the third rounder annoyed me so much that "bad" jokes are wearing thin on my patience.

I don't think anyone could really argue that Golobourne is a good pick. Especially if he could have been had earlier

Philadelphia loves goalies with size committed to NCAA, and they love prospects in the NH area.

This was apparently a no-brainer.

Apparently you have to be at least 6'3" as a goalie to be welcomed in the Flyers organization now a days.

No problem with the pick but why the hell do we always draft these big goalies?

Jedidiah Bartlett did a lot to improve the high school hockey programs while he was Governor of New Hampshire.

Big goalies take up more space in the net. If they are really athletic, that's even less space for a goal

Would you prefer small goalies?

Water Polo?

Shoulda drafted Andro Bušlje... shut down D man, fast, tough 6'7 and 260 pounds...

Onto a winner once we teach him how to skate... but hey, water... ice, almost the same eh?
