Merrick Madsen, who was born in Idaho, started on ice skates as a forward at age 5, but switched to netminding the next season when the only mite goalie aged up. He previously played for the Las Vegas Outlaws until moving to California at age 8.
Living in a rural town known for its “farm-like” atmosphere did little to slow Merrick’s hockey progress. Mom and Dad were tasked with getting Merrick to and from the nearest ice rink, which was more than 30 miles away in Valencia.
Merrick played for the Valencia Express, West Valley Wolves & the California Heat.
His coach is impressed by Madsen's strengths, but equally boasts of his goaltender's ability to identify weaknesses and improve on them. "He's got great feet. He moves post-to-post very well. He has been working on his glove and getting better on the shots upstairs," said Walsh.
Madsen will spend the 2013-14 season playing for the Des Moines Bucaneers in the United States Hockey League (USHL). In Des Moines he will be replacing Providence recruit Nick Ellis between the pipes. Former Ferris State player Jon Rogger coaches Des Moines, but one of his assistants is Coach Walsh's friend, Devereaux, who recommended Madsen to Walsh two years ago.
He'll play back up to Mason next year. Flyers will sign Leighton for depth. Then Bobrovsky goes down in Columbus and Madsen gets traded to the Blue Jacekts. He then saves the season, wins Vezina and Conn Smythe and goes into lead Columbus to a Stanley cup. After that, he will want 6mil/season
Just a little insight on Madsen. I've known this kid for quite a few years and he's got tons of potential. He's about 6'5 with amazing footwork for a goalie with his frame and age. He's going to des moines next year and committed to harvard. He could end up being a huge steal as a 6th if he develops properly. Enjoy!
