They would sign him this year, he would burn a year while pocketing some NHL coin and would play insane minutes in Rochester. Then after a year long adjustment to the pro game he could pick wherever he wants to play.
No, that is false. Junior players can be signed to contracts and college players must leave college in order to sign contracts.

Am I the only one without a shred of hope that Cal signs in Buffalo? Like, for me, it's a foregone conclusion that he'll never be a Sabre.

I'm not planning on him signing here, but he's still our property so there's always gonna be a chance. He's got a pretty good opportunity here as well so I think that will only help us.

I pretty much just shrug whenever Kris Baker tweets about him. I kinda feel like he's not a Sabres prospect at all because I think there is exactly 0% chance he signs with us.

I'm really not too worried tbh, sounds like he & the ND goalie coach have a good relationship with Sabres brass/scouts. I dont think there are many better situations out there for him to just be able to pick his team without any competition. He can instantly slide into the 2/3 slot behind Lehner competing with Ullmark. If you look around the league, most teams have better goalie depth and at least one prospect in Cals tier.

Lets not go overrating him just because he's our property.

Hopefully. That draft by Reiger could possibly have given Murray Risto, Bailey, Baptiste, Petersen, and the ammo to get O'Reilly (Compher and Zads). Not a bad head start Murray had.

Has there been any hint or rumor from his camp that he is seriously considering going the FA route? It feels like everything is speculation that he could do it, but there doesn't seem to be anything suggesting he will actually do it.

There were no rumblings that Fasching or McCabe were going to go the free agency route either, but that didn't stop people from fretting about it.

Its a Buffalo thing.
We expect the worst.
We are not often disappointed.
Wake me up the next time Crosby gets fined by the NHL.

I'm not seeing the reason to panic. Sure, there's like 1 kid every year who uses the loophole. But, their all immediate NHLers, to varying degrees. There's a first for everything, but I can't think of a goalie who used this college loophole to pick their spot.

He's AHL bound out of the gate whatever he does anyways.

To get Petersen signed the organization is going to have to go after him as hard as they did with Vesey. If Murray's sold on Lehner, it's not going to happen.

And it's not like he's head and shoulders above other NCAA free agent goalies, teams will have other options without having to wait for his decision. Guys like Peyton Jones (PSU), Parker Gahagan (Army), Cam Johnson (NDak) will garner interest. Rangers just signed Chris Nell (BG). I'm not worried.

Who's the last goalie to use the loophole? Matt O'Connor? (Or was he undrafted?). He's not exactly lighting the world on fire in the AHL.

@NDHockey - 1-0 UM | Petersen with a big glove save on Kloos and Bjork gets a good look at the other end - saved by Schierhorn - 10 minutes left in the 1st Period.
@SabresProspects - It's pretty clear that Petersen is going to busy today. He has 10 saves in the first 10:55.

O'Connor was undrafted and really could have used another year at BU anyways.

Looks like Petersen will fit right in to the Bylsma stretch-pass system.
