Larry Robinson was stated to be (0-3-1) and 14 points, but that only adds up to 10, so can't be correct, (1-3-0) could be.

Found almost complete voting for the first official NHL All-Star teams in 1930-31. It is missing 7 votes for the alternate team defense, 3 of which belong to Shore, so we need only 4 more. The 7 missing points and the one for McVicar are also not assigned to left or right defense.

There is also no mention of the coaches, so I'm not sure when or how they were voted for.

looks like we don't actually have 1967 all-stars. They are identical to 1968 (note Bobby Orr being 1st)

Biggest gaps in years or blocks of years that are already pretty well-known:

- 1946 Hart beyond 5th
- 1953 Hart beyond 5th
- 1954 Hart beyond 5th
- 1957 Hart beyond 6th
- 1967 all-stars
- 1975 Hart beyond 10th
- 1977 Hart beyond 10th, Norris beyond 5th
- 2002 awards beyond 10th

agree?

We have them, must be a copy-paste error. I've fixed it now.

you know what would be awesome? the full details of the all-star teams from before 1931, as voted on by the GMs.

TDMM found the full details for 1928, and there is strong evidence suggesting Worters and Bill Cook were on at least a few others, but obviously there is lots we don't know here.

I have a couple questions about Hart voting...

I know in the past there was two rounds of voting, once at the season's halfway mark and once at the season's end.

1. When did they change the voting to be end of season only?

2. Under the old system, during the second round of voting, were the voters suppose to vote based on what the players did for the entire season or only based on what they did in the second half of the season?

Good call. I've been meaning to copy it to here, but haven't gotten around to it. I spent some time trying to find the other pre-1930 unofficial AS teams, but wasn't successful.

I knew that George Hay and apparently Worters were members of the unofficial All-Star teams selected by GMs, so I searched for them in the archives, and got the full unofficial All-Star team for 1927-28.

Anyone know what other years Worters was supposedly on one of these teams? Or any other player who was on one of these teams? I think it would be easier to find the teams by searching for names of players.

Anyway, the Unofficial All-Star Team of 1927-28, as voted on "by managers of the ten clubs:"

"To Morenz goes the honor of being the only unanimous choice. He was placed at his regular center positions by seven managers and at left wing by three. Just behind him in the balloting is Eddie Shore, rugged Boston defense star with nine first team and one second team vote. Roy Worters, wee goalie of the Pittsburgh Pirates polled seven votes for first team, one for second. Bill Cook, captain of the New York Rangers, is awarded one of the wing positions on the basis of seven first team and three second team ballots."

Article goes on to say that Ching Johnson got 4 votes for 1st team, 4 votes for 2nd. George Hay got 4 votes for 1st Team, 2 votes for 2nd.

First Team:
Goal: Worters (Pittsburgh)
Right Defense: Shore (Boston)
Left Defense: Johnson (NY Rangers)
Center: Morenz (Montreal Canadiens)
Right Wing: Bill Cook (NY Rangers)
Left Wing: Hay (Detroit)

Second Team
Goal: Hainsworth (Canadiens)
Right Defense: Clancy (Ottawa)
Left Defense: Gardner* (Canadiens)
Center: Boucher (NY Rangers)
Right Wing: Oliver (Boston)
Left Wing: Joliat (Canadiens)

*I assume this is a typo and they mean Herb Gardiner. There was no "Gardner" on the Canadiens this season.

The mid and end season voting started with 1953-54 voting and ended with the 1967-68 voting.

They were supposed to take only their second half play into consideration for the second half voting.

The United Press (UP) selected an all-star for some years as well. Not sure when they started or stopped.

If page 5 still has the complete voting, here is the 1935-36 all-star voting that is missing:

1932-33: I couldn't find a paper that listed both the 1st and 2nd team votes, only the 1st were given. Luckily the first few years they published every voters list leading up to the release of the final list. So I compiled the complete list.

I'm not sure that the RD/LD split had any bearing on the vote. Some papers didn't make a distinction, and none of the final articles mentioned anything except total votes cast, with 1st team votes being a tie breaker. The 4 defensemen were the top 4 vote getters as well as the top guys in the 1st/2nd RD/LD spots. Irvin won the 2nd team coach spot having 14 votes with 7 1st team votes to Gerard's 14 votes with only 2 1st team votes.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 32 voters, 1st and 2nd format

It explains how Kelly can have 177 of a possible 180 points.
Here's a more detailed explanation as to how things worked with Montreal having far more selectors than any other city:

Quote:
Since ballots are distributed to make the voting equal in the six league cities, most of the Montreal writers and sportscasters have been limited to selections either for the all-stars or one trophy.

The writer was chosen for the Norris Trophy voting, which turns out to be the easiest of the lot.
The writer then lists his first, second, and third selections for the Norris, followed by who he would have voted for if he had votes in anything else:

Not sure when they stopped the weighted votes, but you can see several times where players get impossible totals like 177 of 180 for Kelly in 53-54 and Mahovlich getting 89 out of 90 in 62-63, and scores like 42.5 for Sloan in 53-54, or the 99.4 to 99.2 Calder results for Douglas and Barkley in 62-63.

I recall one article mentioning a player getting a vote worth less than half a point, so his name doesn't appear in the voting results.

The article I gave said Montreal had 22 voters, and there was a time when Toronto had 20+ voters because Smythe thought Toronto was not getting a fair shake in the voting.

This presents a more complete look at the 1940-41 All Star Teams than we already had:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...390,2069755&dq

No complete point totals unfortunately. For example, in goal, it says that Broda and Brimsek were close, only Mowers and Kerr received additional votes, and Kerr only had one point.

Goal:
1. Turk Broda
2. Frank Brimsek
3. Johnny Mowers
4. Dave Kerr 1

COACH: FIRST TEAM: Lester Patrick, NYR; SECOND TEAM: Dick Irvin, Tor;

I went and found the individual ballots in various newspapers. It was a 34 part series, but I never found the 8th part. Since there are only 33 votes, this might not matter. Unfortunately the votes don't add up. For starters we have vote 27, which clearly shows a 1st team vote for Gottselig at LW, which doesn't fit with Jackson getting all the 1st team votes. NHL All-Stars, Vote 27 Either there was a mistake in vote 27 as published, or it wasn't counted for some reason, or the final tally is wrong. This leads to Gottselig as the 2nd team LW as well so it has a large impact.

Here is the total as I have it, with the known differences in Red:

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 33 voters, 1st and 2nd format
GOALTENDER: FIRST TEAM: Lorne Chabot, Chi 9; Tiny Thompson, Bos 8; Roy Worters, NYA 7; Alex Connell, Mtl M, 4; George Hainsworth, Tor 3; Dave Kerr, NYR 1; Wilf Cude, Mtl 1
SECOND TEAM: Alex Connell, Mtl M, 7; Lorne Chabot, Chi 7; George Hainsworth, Tor 5; Tiny Thompson, Bos 5; Dave Kerr, NYR 4; Roy Worters, NYA 4; Wilf Cude, Mtl 1
DEFENSE: FIRST TEAM: RIGHT D: Eddie Shore, Bos 19; Art Coulter, Chi 4; Earl Seibert, NYR 3; Red Horner, Tor 3; Cy Wentworth, Mtl M 2; Lionel Conacher, Mtl M 1; King Clancy, Tor 1
LEFT D: Earl Seibert, NYR 11; Art Coulter, Chi 6; Eddie Shore, Bos 5; Ebbie Goodfellow, Det 4; Hap Day, Tor 3; Ralph Bowman, StL-Det 1; Lionel Conacher, Mtl M 1; Cy Wentworth, Mtl M 1; King Clancy, Tor 1
ALTERNATE TEAM: RIGHT D: Cy Wentworth, Mtl M 10; Art Coulter, Chi 7; King Clancy, Tor 5; Eddie Shore, Bos 4; Lionel Conacher, Mtl M 2; Earl Seibert, NYR 2; Ebbie Goodfellow, Det 1; Hap Day, Tor 1; Red Dutton, NYA 1
LEFT D: Ralph Bowman, StL-Det 6; Earl Seibert, NYR 6; Art Coulter, Chi 4; Hap Day, Tor 4; Eddie Shore, Bos 2; Ebbie Goodfellow, Det 2; Lionel Conacher, Mtl M 2; King Clancy, Tor 2; Ching Johnson, NYR 1; Walt Buswell, Det 1; Red Horner, Tor 1; Cy Wentworth, Mtl M 1; Irv Frew, StL 1
CENTER: FIRST TEAM: Frank Boucher, NYR 22; Cooney Weiland, Det 6; Syd Howe, Det 2; Johnny Gottselig, Chi 1; Russ Blinco, Mtl M 1; Ebbie Goodfellow, Det 1
SECOND TEAM: Cooney Weiland, Det 9; Frank Boucher, NYR 7; Joe Primeau, Tor 3; Art Chapman, NYA 3; Marty Barry, Bos 2; Russ Blinco, Mtl M 2; Ebbie Goodfellow, Det 2; Syd Howe, Det 2; Howie Morenz, Mtl 2; Carl Voss, StL 1
RIGHT WING: FIRST TEAM: Charlie Conacher, Tor 32; Dit Clapper, Bos 1
SECOND TEAM: Dit Clapper, Bos 13; Bill Cook, NYR 7; Larry Aurie, Det 7; Earl Robinson, Mtl M 3; Johnny Gottselig, Chi 1; Charlie Conacher, Tor 1; Georges Mantha, Mtl 1
LEFT WING: FIRST TEAM: Busher Jackson, Tor 32; Johnny Gottselig, Chi 1
SECOND TEAM: Johnny Gottselig, Chi 9; Aurel Joliat, Mtl 9; Paul Thompson, Chi 3; Syd Howe, Det 3; Sweeney Schriner, NYA 3; Herbie Lewis, Det 2; Bun Cook, NYR 1; Baldy Northcott, Mtl M 1; Marty Barry, Bos 1; Busher Jackson, Tor 1
COACH: FIRST TEAM: Lester Patrick, NYR 14; Dick Irvin, Tor 6; Clem Loughlin, Chi 4; Frank Patrick, Bos 3; Tom Gorman, Mtl M 2; Georges Boucher, StL 1; Conn Smythe, Tor 1
SECOND TEAM: Dick Irvin, Tor 7; Lester Patrick, NYR 7; Tom Gorman, Mtl M 4; Frank Patrick, Bos 4; Jack Adams, Det 2; Clem Loughlin, Chi 2; Leo Dandurand, Mtl 2; Georges Boucher, StL 2; Conn Smythe, Tor 1 (2 no coach selected)

Replacing vote 27:
27- Charles Bartlett, Chicago Tribune
First Team: Chabot, Chicago, goal; Shore, Boston, right defense; Seibert, Rangers, left defense; Boucher, Rangers, center; Conacher, Toronto, right wing; Gottselig, Chicago, left wing; Loughlin, Chicago, coach
Second Team: Worters, Americans, goal; Coulter, Chicago, right defense; Day, Toronto, left defense; Weiland, Detroit, center; W. Cook, Rangers, right wing; Jackson, Toronto, left wing; L. Patrick, Rangers, coach

with this:
First Team: Connell, Maroons, goal; Seibert, Rangers, right defense; Coulter, Chicago, left defense; Boucher, Rangers, center; Conacher, Toronto, right wing; Jackson, Toronto, left wing; Unknown, coach
Second Team: Hainsworth, Toronto, goal; Unknown, right defense; Unknown, left defense; Weiland, Detroit, center; Unknown, right wing; Joliat, Canadiens, left wing; Unknown, coach

would make both totals add up the same. The 2nd team RW also couldn't be Clapper, Aurie or Robinson.

1935-36 All-Stars

None of the articles that I can find give a vote total.

I again added up the individual ballots, and they agree with the given totals with the exception of Eddie Shore being said to have 27 1st team votes, where I have 25. I am going to assume that 27 is a typo. Also there was one vote for Couture, Rangers. I am assuming that this was meant to be Coulter, Rangers.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 31 voters, 1st and 2nd format
GOALTENDER: FIRST TEAM: Tiny Thompson, Bos 30; Wilf Cude, Mtl 1

1936-37 All-Stars

None of the non pay papers had any mention of vote totals, not even how many votes were cast in total. Hockey Outsider gives voting totals from the Globe & Mail in post 125 which match my totals with the exception of his having a 1st place vote for Jimmy Ward at RW.
