1938-39 All-Stars

A little background for those not familiar with the CP All-Star voting. Ballots went out in February and were published in various newspapers in March and the final results were released in mid to late March.

Polls Are Opened By The C.P. For All-Star Election, Feb. 17, 1939

So a close scoring race in February might show in the voting, but if a player starts to run away with it in March it will have no effect. You can see this in the 1937-38 voting where Drillon pulled away from Dillon after the voting was already done.

Two Assists Keep Drillon Ahead Of Dillon And Apps In National League Score

I found a paper that published the voting totals for both the 1st and 2nd teams for 1938-39, so I wont bother adding up the individual ballots at this time, but as noted there are some votes missing, and there's an extra 2nd team LW vote. It isn't unusual for some ballots not to include a 2nd team coach selection, or a 1st for that matter, so there may not be any votes missing there.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 34 voters, 1st and 2nd (3-1) format

1939-40 All-Stars

I again added up the individual votes, and though details in the articles are few, the results match those they do give.

Note that Lester Patrick actually finished just ahead of Frank Boucher in coach voting, and Art Ross got the 1st team votes, but Weiland got the 2nd team votes for Boston coaches.

1940-41 All-Stars

There was little voting data in the final articles, so again I had to total the votes. I was only able to find 29 of the 30 votes, and there is only a one point difference between the totals given for Irvin and Day, where Irvin has 1 more point and Day 1 less than reported. That is after giving Day the 1st team vote on the missing ballot. All other totals match, or do after a vote on the missing ballot.

The missing ballot would have to have on the 1st team, Clapper and Heller on defense, right/left can't be determined, and Day as coach. Apps is almost certainly the center, but none of the articles specifically say anything to confirm this 100%. Stanowski is one of the D on the 2nd team, but otherwise no names can be confirmed.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 29/30 voters, 1st and 2nd (3-1) format

1941-42 All-Stars

This is the first year that vote weighting is mentioned. There were 30 voters: Boston 6, Chicago 4, Detroit 3 (including Windsor), Montreal 6, New York 7, Toronto 3, and one unknown. I only found 29 of the 30 ballots.

Point totals were given for the 4 defensemen fighting for the 2nd team spots, but no vote totals were given for them, so it is hard to get much of an idea of how the weighting was done, other than it must be multiplication rather than division being used.

Here are there weighted totals and the unweighted totals from the known votes: McDonald 116-15 (3-6), Egan 104-23 (6-5), Kampman 84-12 (2-6), Clapper 84-15 (4-3), and Crawford 80-21 (6-3).

McDonald received 1sts from Tor, Tor, NY and 2nds from Chi, Bos, NY, Bos, Bos, NY.

Egan received 1sts from Bos, Mtl, Bos, NY, Bos, Bos and 2nds from Bos, Chi, Bos, NY, NY.

Egan's 4 1st place votes from the 6 Boston voters would weigh as much as McDonald's 2 1sts from the 3 Toronto voters.

Where the unknown ballot comes from and who they voted for would change the picture as well.

The unknown ballot is a known for most of the 1st team through totals given in the final results articles, and we can say that Anderson isn't on the defense, nor are Abel, Blake or Hamill the 2nd team LW. Here's what we do know:

First Team: Rayner, Americans, G; Seibert, Chicago, D; Watson, Rangers, C; Hextall, Rangers, RW; Patrick, Rangers, LW; Thompson, Chicago, coach
Second Team: Drillon, Toronto, RW;

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 29/30 voters, 1st and 2nd (3-1) format, weighted voting
GOALTENDER: FIRST TEAM: Frank Brimsek, Bos 24; Turk Broda, Tor 3; Chuck Rayner, Bro 2
SECOND TEAM: Turk Broda, Tor 22; Frank Brimsek, Bos 5; Chuck Rayner, Bro 2

1962-63 All-Stars

Similar to 63-64, I found an almost complete voting record, missing 2 points on D and 1 on LW, for the 1st half but little beyond the top spots in the second half.

Mahovlich received an impossible 89/90 in first half voting due to the weighted voting.

ALL-STAR TEAMS:
GOALTENDER: (299/324, 162-137) Glenn Hall, Chi 142 (61-81); Terry Sawchuk, Det 76 (61-15); Jacques Plante, Mtl 71 (30-41); Gump Worsley, NYR (8-); Johnny Bower, Tor (2-)
DEFENSE: (542/648, 322-220) Pierre Pilote, Chi 149 (66-83); Carl Brewer, Tor 124 (53-71); Tim Horton, Tor 68 (27-41); Elmer Vasko, Chi 57 (32-25); Jean-Guy Talbot, Mtl (30-); Marcel Pronovost, Det (25-); Bill Gadsby, Det (20-); Kent Douglas, Tor (12-); Bob Baun, Tor (9-); Doug Harvey, NYR (8-); Doug Mohns, Bos (8-); J.C. Tremblay, Mtl (6-); Doug Barkley, Det (5-); Albert Langlois, NYR (5-); Leo Boivin, Bos (4-); Lou Fontinato; Mtl (4-); Harry Howell, NYR (3-); Al MacNeil, Chi (2-); Wayne Hillman, Chi (2-); Howie Young, Det (1-)
CENTER: (315/324, 162-153) Stan Mikita, Chi 160 (83-77); Henri Richard, Mtl 84 (46-38); Dave Keon, Tor 56 (18-38); Alex Delvecchio, Det (7-); Murray Oliver, Bos (5-); Billy Harris, Tor (2-); Bill Hay, Chi (1-)
RIGHT WING: (306/324, 162-144) Gordie Howe, Det 157 (67-90); Andy Bathgate, NYR 117 (63-54); Bernie Geoffrion, Mtl (27-); George Armstrong, Tor (3-); Bobby Hull, Chi (1-); Dean Prentice, NYR (1-)
LEFT WING: (300/324, 161-139) Frank Mahovlich, Tor 166 (89-77); Bobby Hull, Chi 55 (11-44); John Bucyk, Bos 31 (13-18); Gilles Tremblay, Mtl (16-); Parker MacDonald, Det (11-); Ab McDonald, Chi (11-); Dean Prentice, NYR (10-)

The 1943-1953 period is the only time from 1931 to the present where we don't have a detailed record of who the most highly regarded defensemen were, by season, either through all-star or norris votes, or both.

1942-43 All-Stars

Forgot to mention that in 41-42 the all-star voting was later by about 3 weeks. They started printing the votes around the time they were releasing the results the year before. The voting is still happening before the season is over, but much closer to the end than before.

Joe Benoit received the most 1st place votes for RW, but missed the 2nd team by two-thirds of a point due to weighting of the vote. He received 103 and a third points while Bryan Hextall received 104.

There isn't much detail in the final results articles, and I could only find 26 of the 30 votes for this season.

Can't say much about the missing ballots other than: Cowley is the 1st team center on all 4, Benoit is the 1st team RW on 2 of them, and Ross and Adams each grabbed 2 of the 1st team coaching spots.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 26/30 voters, 1st and 2nd (3-1) format, weighted voting

1943-44 All-Stars

The final results articles didn't have much detail, but they had enough that with all 28 votes, I could work out the weighted point totals. The only difference in my results and those in the papers is the total for Pratt, which the papers give as 674, or 42 more than I have him at. Of course the papers only give 5 point totals.

With a maximum of 756 points divided between 6 cities, we get 126 per city for their 1st place votes, and 42 for their 2nd place votes

Votes: Boston 6; Chicago 3; Detroit 3; Montreal 7; New York 7; Toronto 2. Point values: Boston 21-7; Chicago 42-14; Detroit 42-14; Montreal 18-6; New York 18-6; Toronto 63-21.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 28 voters, 1st and 2nd format, weighted to give each city equal voting power, possible 756 points
GOALTENDER: Bill Durnan, Mtl 756 (28-0); Paul Bibeault, Tor 175 (0-21); Mike Karakas, Chi 42 (0-4); Connie Dion, Det 28 (0-2); Bert Gardiner, Bos 7 (0-1)
DEFENSE: Babe Pratt, Tor 632 (2-19-3-2); Earl Seibert, Chi 612 (16-4-4-4); Butch Bouchard, Mtl 277 (6-2-6-4); Dit Clapper, Bos 129 (1-3-2-1); Flash Hollett, Det 93 (0-0-3-7); Jack Crawford, Bos 67 (0-0-4-5); Cully Simon, Det 46 (1-0-1-1); Bob Davidson, Tor 42 (1-0-0-0); Bill Quackenbush, Det 34 (0-0-3-0); Glen Harmon, Mtl 27 (0-0-1-1); Ott Heller, NYR 27 (0-0-0-2); Leo Lamoureux, Mtl 24 (1-0-0-1); Pat Egan, Bos 6 (0-0-1-0)
CENTER: Bill Cowley, Bos 650 (23-4); Elmer Lach, Mtl 187 (3-15); Clint Smith, Chi 110 (2-3); Syd Howe, Det 34 (0-3); Carl Liscombe, Det 14 (0-1); Phil Watson, Mtl 13 (0-2)
RIGHT WING: FIRST TEAM: Lorne carr, Tor 514 (17-8); Maurice Richard, Mtl 116 (4-6); Bill Mosienko, Chi 113 (3-5); Herb Cain, Bos 98 (2-1); Bryan Hextall, NYR 91 (1-4); Joe Carveth, Det 49 (1-1); Syd Howe, Det 7 (0-1); Elmer Lach, Mtl 6 (0-1); Doug Bentley, Chi 6 (0-1)
LEFT WING: FIRST TEAM: Doug Bentley, Chi 584 (18-7); Herb Cain, Bos 264 (8-9); Carl Liscombe, Det 62 (1-4); Bill Mosienko, Chi 20 (0-2); Phil Watson, Mtl 18 (1-0); Adam Brown, Det 14 (0-1); Elmer Lach, Mtl 14 (0-1); Lorne Carr, Tor 14 (0-1); Toe Blake, Mtl 12 (0-2); Syd Howe, Det 6 (0-1)

I didn't follow the NHL back in 92-93, but how could Chelios almost unanimously walk away with the Norris Trophy that year? Bourque outscored him, lead his team in +/- (+38) and drew only 20 minors. Chelios was +14 and had his fair share of undisciplined penalties (282 PIM is just insane).

I really wouldn't call 33 of 50 first place votes almost unanimous. The fact that Bourque and Murphy only got 35 votes to Chelios' 49 is what makes the margin so large.

I would assume that Chicago having the best GA in the league played a big part. They gave up 38 fewer than Boston, and Boston was tied for the third least GA given up.

Of course the fact that neither Bourque or Chelios appear on all the ballots for the Norris or the All-star team is a head scratcher as well. Somehow 15 voters didn't think Bourque was one of the top 3 defensemen, and 4 didn't see him in the top 6.

That was back in the days when high PIMs were considered a positive, a sign of Chelios' ability to intimidate.

1944-45 All-Stars

Other than Durnan and Richard being unanimous choices and getting the maximum of 378 points, the final results articles are void of any details.

I was only able to find 27 of the 28 votes, but we can give a close approximation of the weighted point totals.

Votes Boston 7; Chicago 1; Detroit 3; Montreal 7; New York 7; Toronto 2. Point values: Boston 9-3; Chicago 63-21; Detroit 21-7; Montreal 9-3; New York 9-3; Toronto 31.5-10.5.

This will change with the addition of the missing vote of course, but it will only change the value of the other vote(s) from the same city. The points from the missing vote are already included in these totals, and will need to transferred from the players that received votes on the other ballot(s) from the same city. Durnan and Richard will still remain at 378 as they will be taking the points from themselves.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 27/28 voters, 1st and 2nd format, weighted to give each city equal voting power, possible 378 points
GOALTENDER: Bill Durnan, Mtl 378 (27-0); Mike Karakas, Chi 79 (0-14); Frank McCool, Tor 34 (0-10); Harry Lumley, Det 10 (0-2); Ken McAuley, NYR 3 (0-1)
DEFENSE: Butch Bouchard, Mtl 340.5 (15-10-1-0); Flash Hollett, Det 273 (1-12-5-7); Babe Pratt, Tor 93.5 (1-1-5-9); Glen Harmon, Mtl 60 (2-1-1-0); Frank Eddolls, Mtl 58.5 (1-0-2-1); Jack Crawford, Bos 57 (3-2-4-0); Earl Seibert, Chi 45 (0-1-6-2); Leo Lamoureux, Mtl 30 (3-0-1-0); Dit Clapper, Bos 30 (1-0-2-5); Reg Hamilton, Tor 13.5 (0-0-0-2); Ott Heller, NYR 7 (0-0-0-1)

COACH: Dick Irvin, Mtl 313.5 (21-4); Jack Adams, Det 78 (1-13); Hap Day, Tor 22.5 (0-5); Art Ross, Bos 9 (1-0); Paul Thompson, Chi 24 (2-2); Frank Boucher, NYR 6 (0-2); Dit Clapper, Bos 9 (1-0);

Still don't have enough info to determine the weighted point results.

1945-46 All-Stars

The voting was done after the playoffs rather than in the weeks leading up to the end of the season.

I could only find 17 of the 22 votes as several papers seemed to stop printing the individual ballots. The Montreal Gazette only printed up to the 18th vote, and stated that it was the last part, so I'm not sure that all votes were published.

The only voting info in the final results articles is that Durnan received 1002 of a possible 1080 points, and that Stewart was close to Crawford and Bouchard. Stewart is listed 4th in defensemen voting because he was the 2nd team LD, not because he finished 4th in voting.

Due to the lack of info and the weighted voting, I can't place anybody beyond the 1st and 2nd team in any kind of order other than roughly based on the known votes.

The votes I found came from: Boston 5; Chicago 0; Detroit 4; Montreal 5; New York 2; Toronto 1.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 17/22 voters, weighted to give each city equal voting power, possible 1080 points
GOALTENDER: Bill Durnan, Mtl (15-2); Frank Brimsek, Bos (2-8); Harry Lumley, Det (1-7);
DEFENSE: Jack Crawford, Bos (6-3-3-3); Butch Bouchard, Mtl (5-6-0-1); Ken Reardon, Mtl (2-0-4-1); Jack Stewart Det (3-8-3-3); Bill Quackenbush, Det (0-0-2-4); Leo Lamoureux, Mtl (1-0-1-1); Bob Goldham, Tor (0-0-1-3); Babe Pratt, Tor (0-0-2-1); Pat Egan, Bos (0-0-1-0);
CENTER: Max Bentley, Chi (8-6); Elmer Lach, Mtl (9-5); Milt Schmidt, Bos (0-6);

1946-47 All-Stars

This is the first year where the 6 NHL coaches did the All-Star voting, and marks the end of coaches being part of the all-star teams. Voting was expanded to 3rd place voting, and a 3-2-1 point format. As a coach couldn't vote for his own players, a player could receive a maximum of 5 votes and 15 points.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 6 NHL coaches voted, 3-2-1 format, 15 points possible
GOALTENDER: (36, 6-6-6) Bill Durnan, Mtl 13 (4-0-1); Frank Brimsek, Bos 8 (1-1-3); Turk Broda, Tor 7 (1-2-0); Chuck Rayner, NYR 5 (0-2-1); Harry Lumley, Det 3 (0-1-1)
DEFENSE: (72, 12-12-12) Ken Reardon, Mtl 13 (4-0-1); Butch Bouchard, Mtl 12 (2-3-0); Jack Stewart Det 11 (2-2-1); Bill Quackenbush, Det 11 (2-2-1); Jack Crawford, Bos 9 (1-3-0); Wally Stanowski, Tor 5 (1-0-2); Neil Colville, NYR 5 (0-1-3); Glen Harmon, Mtl 3 (0-1-1); Murray Henderson, Bos 2 (0-0-2); Gus Mortson, Tor 1 (0-0-1)
CENTER: (36, 6-6-6) Milt Schmidt, Bos 14 (4-1-0); Max Bentley, Chi 10 (1-3-1); Ted Kennedy, Tor 7 (1-1-2); Elmer Lach, Mtl 2 (0-1-0); Syl Apps, Tor 1 (0-0-1); Billy Taylor, Det 1 (0-0-1); Billy Reay, Mtl 1 (0-0-1)
RIGHT WING: (36, 6-6-6) Maurice Richard, Mtl 15 (5-0-0); Bobby Bauer, Bos 11 (1-4-0); Bill Mosienko, Chi 5 (0-1-3); Howie Meeker, Tor 4 (0-1-2); Grant Warwick, NYR 1 (0-0-1)
LEFT WING: (36, 6-6-6) Doug Bentley, Chi 10 (2-2-0); Woody Dumart, Bos 9 (1-2-2); Ted Lindsay, Det 7 (2-0-1); Tony Leswick, NYR 4 (0-1-2); Harry Watson, Tor 3 (1-0-0); Roy Conacher, Det 2 (0-1-0); Jim Conacher, Det 1 (0-0-1)

...leaving a period of six years (1948, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53) where we don't have deeper knowledge beyond the 4 D-men that made the all-star team.

awesome work!

...and, thank god those seasons are done and you can move on to better years.

Best I could find for this season was a listing to third team.

RIGHT WING: (41/54, 5-3-0) Maurice Richard, Mtl 23 (4-1-0); Gordie Howe, Det 11 (1-2-0); Bill Mosienko, Chi 7;
LEFT WING: (51/54, 6-6-3) Roy Conacher, Chi 19 (2-3-0); Ted Lindsay, Det 17 (2-2-1); Harry Watson, Tor 15 (2-1-2);

1949-50 All-Stars

Again the best I could find was a listing for the third team, but a Boston paper listed Boston players that received consideration, and a couple mentioned Prystai without voting totals.

The Boston paper mentioned that Irvin called Flaman one of the best defensemen in the league often, but didn't place him on his ballot.

ALL-STAR TEAMS: 6 NHL coaches voted, 5-3-1 format, 25 points possible
GOALTENDER: (48/54, 6-5-3) Bill Durnan, Mtl 21 (3-2-0); Chuck Rayner, NYR 17 (2-2-1); Turk Broda, Tor 10 (1-1-2);
