He will clear and get bought out, Tom Gilbert will get bought out. Maybe they will both sign half price deals with Minnesota and Vancouver, because there would be a spot for them especially Ballard with a chance at a top 4 in Minnesota. Minnesota has Suter, Brodin and then a bunch of 5,6 defenseman.

As a 4-5 in the right system, and on the 2nd PP unit, I think. He can still be an alright d-man, he just has pretty low hockey senses so he makes a fair amount of mistakes. He can throw a sick hipcheck, he's gritty, he's also a great skater and a good shot blocker.

Buying him out results in a cap hit against the team.

A player claimed on waivers is paid his full salary by the new team and nothing by his old club.

Why on Earth would anyone voluntarily give away millions of dollars when they could at least see if someone else would take him off their hands for free?

Would you take a brand new car to the scrap dealer and pay him to tow it away before just giving the keys to someone else?

I didn't think Compliance Buyouts counted against as a Cap Hit?

I full expect that if he goes unclaimed then Vancouver will put him on the Waivers used for the purpose of buying him out.

Except Ballard isn't garbage, he's still a serviceable 4-5 d-man who was misused and treated like crap here... So yeah, 1/2.

Gillis is on a tight leash now. It probably helps him that he is also in some business dealings with the current owners on a small scale outside of hockey. He has an extra long leash.

He'll be a top 4 D-Man somewhere, just could never fit in with our team.

You clearly don't know what a compliance buyout is

Ballard still got game. He'd be a solid addition to just about any team for the right price.

Would be strange if no one picked him up. Depends on the contract I guess, if teams feels it's to much or not.

Two more years, $4.2M per. If there's a team with cap space and needing defenseman, they ought to roll the dice. Otherwise, hello CBO.

Still don't completely understand what went wrong in Vancouver. He was a solid 2nd pairing dman in both Phoenix and Florida before being traded to the Cannucks.
a.v benched for small mistakes never really given a fair shot in the top 4. last year he was pretty good. playing alongside tanev when the regulars werent hurt. if nucks hadnt sign hamhuis, hindsight 20/20 ballard would be 2nd pairing IMO. alongside edler or whoever was the dman in 2010 roster. hope he flourishes under a new team

I wouldn't mind him on the Avs for a decent price.

Carolina has an immediate need for another defenseman even with Sekera coming to Raleigh. I don't see why they wouldn't take him, but you could say the same for a few teams.

If he doesn't get claimed, I think he'll get traded. Teams might be interested in him but want to send a contract the other way.

I could see him being traded for a cheaper buyout if he clears. Maybe like Ballard for Zanon or something if Colorado's interested in him.

You assume the Canucks would take a contract back.

I don't think the want to, but they may have too. If they can get a cheap player who fills a hole on the third pair or bottom six it would be worth it.

1. They could see if it turns him around.....then he could be dealt for something at the deadline. if not then next summer they do a compliance buyout on him.
2. they drafted him originally
3. It adds a vet Dmen on a short contract without the pressure to rush them into the lineup. There has been talk of Buffalo adding a vet Dman on a short term contract till the youngsters are ready.
4. By claiming him it also gives them more flexibility in dealing a different Dman (Ehrhoff , Myers, McNabb).

The felling is Risto could be part of the team this year (if not in the AHL) and Zadorov stays one more year in the CHL.
Buffalo should claim him. We have plenty of short term cap space and a need for NHL level d-men in the 1-2 year time horizon until all of the kids come up. Trade him at the deadline 2 years from now if we're not chasing a playoff spot that year.

Ryan Malone for Ballard? Malone will only make 5M over the next two years which is cheaper than Ballard but his caphit is 300K more. Lightning could use another defenseman plus there's a connection with Rick Bowness and Malone is pretty useful when he plays.

If you look at the UFA market for D, it's pretty dismal. Not many who could play second pairing and any who can will likely be asking $4 million anyway. Ballard is still only 30 and a good player caught in a system that didn't work to his strengths, behind others on a deep D, and unable to win over a stubborn coach.

Seriously take a look. Hainsey
Ferrence
Scuderi
Whitney
Zidlicky

Ballard is very underrated and any team that picks him up will be happy

AV killed this guy but he's still a top 4/5 guy with speed and skill

I guess the only way he gets picked now is if a team would like him, but feel they would miss out on him if he be ones a free agent.

Either way. Best of luck to Keith. You never got a chance with us. I think you still have it...just please don't hip check the Canucks onto stretcher on your return.
