Bonus Cushion

I know the Canucks are close to the cap, but if the cap is truly going up by a fair margin next year, couldn't they get creative with using the performance bonus cushion. It is $4.8 million extra that could go to a legit 2nd line scorer.

Which is deducted from our cap next season, so we have to be careful about using this. If the cap jumps by that much, then no problem. If it doesn't, we're in tight again next summer.

Looks like this is exactly what Boston has done to get Iginla in.

Needs to be on 35+ contracts and i've seen nothing that indicates the Canucks want to add vets.

Which might look smart if they win the cup or it might look monumentally stupid if Iginla plays poorly and the cap doesn't go up much. Could make retaining Bergeron tougher in 14-15.

Yeah there aren't performance bonuses unless it's a 35+ contract.

That's not a given! Loonie is down roughly 5%, that alone is somewhere around a $1M-$2M downward pressure on the cap.

I would be very careful about assuming the cap is just going to rocket back up.

Cap can't drop below $64.3M in any one year.

It can also go to players who have played 400+ games and spent at least 100 days on IR during the most recent season, but they must sign a one year contract.

Not sure if there is anyone out there that is in either situation available. Just thought is was an interesting way to circumvent the cap.

Prospal made $2.5 million last year and put up 30 points in 48 games. He is usually a 50 point guy. If you went half and half on a performance bonus, it isn't a big carry over to infuse some skill in the line up.

Really? I would take Prospal. He is durable and consistent. He would be good for around 45 points. He is well conditioned and has a great work ethic. He called out Arniel in CBJ for his half @$$ed practices.

With Booth having trouble staying healthy, I think he'd fill in great and he would be good depth.

On top of everything, with his last contract being only $2.5 million and CBJ deciding to go another direction with Horton, he could be a very reasonable stop gap for one year so we don't rush any prospects.
