The Ballard deal is arguable Gillis's worst move as a GM, and it extends to his 2nd worst move, letting Erhoff walk. 3rd worst move was keeping Ballard on the roster for parts of THREE seasons while employing a coach who refused to play the guy in any capacity, even when the rest of the defense was depleted.

And I actually liked Keith Ballard.

Overpaid and completely miscast here. He's a high risk/medium reward defenseman who on our bottom pairing (due to our depth on the left side) was too risky for what AV wanted from a bottom pairing defenseman.

If he were making half his salary I bet he's still a Canuck.

He might be a kind of serviceable #6-7 defender if he's making $1 million. I wouldn't give him a lick more than that.

He's pretty awful. You'll see most Canuck fans claiming that he 'didn't get a chance' but that's a load of BS. He was given tons of opportunity but was just completely ineffective.

He does 2 things well - he can rush the puck out of his zone a bit, and 2-3 times/year he'll throw an absolutely awesome hipcheck.

Unfortunately, his puck-carrying skills are totally wasted by the fact that he has appalling hockey sense, vision, and passing ability, so nothing ever comes of it. Is billed as an 'skill defender' but is terrible offensively - generates no offense and the team simply doesn't score when he's on the ice.

Defensively, he's very marginal. One of those guys who's always reacting and chasing the play, and never looks calm and in control - again, is let down by poor hockey sense. He does have heart and is pretty good at recovering and blocking shots, but the sum total of his contribution isn't great.

Basically he's an undersized skill defender who doesn't score and is below-average defensively. Which isn't exactly a great combination.

Yeah, Ballard being likeable makes this harder to digest.

I thought it was the wrong move for Gillis to make at the time (even if Ballard performed as advertised) and it turned out even worse than I could imagine.

We did, or thereabouts. Ehrhoff wanted it frontloaded and long term. Gillis insisted on five years being the max and Hoff walked.

Yeah Gillis was prepared to have both Bieksa & Ehrhoff on the team - Ballard didn't have anything to do with Ehrhoff bolting for the Sabres. Gillis gave him a "take it or leave it offer".

Everything reported at the time was that the issue was value, not term.

The reports in the media here were that Ehrhoff wanted 5 years/$26 million but that Gillis wouldn't go over the $4.5 million that Bieksa and Hamhuis were getting, and had basically put an 'internal cap' in place on our existing group of defenders.

The 10-year deal thing only came up after being traded to Buffalo, as the way they decided to structure it to get cap relief.

So on top of his forgettable time in Vancouver, does/will Keith Ballard also carry the distinction of being the only Vancouver Canuck ever to be bought out?

No, we bought Marc Chouinard out too.

He was so bad - he wasn't even worth "shelting his cap hit" in the minors because he wasn't good enough for the Moose.

It is probably his worst move, but to say it was his 3rd worst move is a little much... sure there is a bigger list of gripes people have

I'd agree it was definitely his worst move. I was an early supporter of Ballard, but the more we saw him play the more evident it was he pretty much sucks. His last year in Florida was terrible as well, and we pretty much rolled the dice on him getting his game back to the level he had in Phoenix.

I really don't see it happening. Like I said he's a pretty terrible player in a lot of regards. Nice guy though.

Yeah, the remaining two years on his five year deal were bought out.

I believe we bought out Santala as well but I could be mistaking him for Chouinard.

Could you guys imagine, if we didnt sign Hamhuis so we would have been forced to play Ballard in a top 4 role? Yikes.

Jeebus....another "Nonis special".

Santala......the one player who ruined the theory that "anybody could play with the Sedins - even Wade Brookbank".

Yah. but would he have gotten maybe 20+? playing alongside bieska? edler/erhoff. salo/whoever was on the roster that year. a.v probbaly wouldnt give him the mins. he'll be pressbox bound for half the amount of games. but who knows. might have flourished a bit. wonder whose input was it to aquire ballard.

Well this was all just downright disappointing. I really thought Ballard was going to be a great player here and the perfect replacement for Ehrhoff. Oh well, he had some good moments here and we'll have the caphit from his buyout to remember him by. Best of luck to him.
