Yeah, but the Leafs were stupid enough to pony up 2 1st rounders in years they were expected to be bad...that kind of overpayment will more than make up for the division factor. Same reason they traded Raycroft to the Leafs...somehow I think they are still laughing to the bank on that one.

If Regier were to give that kind of overpayment, we'd be calling for his head.

I'd give him a 4/16 deal and wouldn't think twice. He's a center and the perfect 2nd line center at that.
im not surprised

No need to go public with coach discontent. None.
Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade. Carlyle is quite possibly the dumbest coach in the NHL and Nonis is setting up the Leafs nicely for another decade-long playoff drought.

Grabo put up good numbers when you look at the skew between his d-zone and o-zone starts. He's been mishandled by a bad organization, and I look forward to it completely blowing up in the Leafs face

Grabo is not a bad player.

But those comments really fly against the way this team is being built. Guys like Girgensons, Compher, etc. are all about "you get what you earn, not what you deserve". No sense of entitlement.

Now, I don't know how much of Grabo's comments is a lost in translation type thing or what, but it might be a case of "he's a good player, but not right now for this team". It might be that in a few years once our young core has stepped into their leadership roles you add a guy like him for that little extra push, but right now no need to tempt fate.

He didn't go public with discontent, he was bought out and then said that, afaik.

I didn't hate the idea of Grabo before his comments about Carlyle. Who is an old-school guy who definitely plays "his guys." Grabovski did kind-of-okay in a checking role on a terrible defensive team (he's there because Bozak-Kessel have a thing, Kadri is just better offensively) and probably got benched due to a lack of offensive production in that role in relation to his contract with the coach not adjusting for the fact that two of his most common linemates were Jay McClement and Leo Komarov.

He's a dependably north-south player with some possession/defensive value, and if they do their due diligence about his work ethic, I wouldn't hate him on a 3 year deal.

I don't quite consider Grabovski's comments to the media to be the same as, say, Gerbe's. There are some similarities, including both of them unstating how much ice time they got to excuse being disappointing. Grabovski didn't play just 6 minutes *at all* this past season, and actually there wasn't a single game where he played under 10 minutes. That said, unlike Gerbe, he's an actual NHL player so he's not as self-deluded as Gerbe is. Also, Grabovski's comments at least came after his contract got bought out rather than during the season, like Gerbe

The guy that harped on Ruff for years is defending Carlyle here? Is this real life?

Carlyle is objectively terrible. And if you're trying to say demoting Grabo somehow contributed to the Leafs making the playoffs, you're high.

Seems like a hack.

Or he's just come out by infuriating a large part of Texas?

I'm trying to figure out what the Blues are planning. IIRC they already had 23 roster players before these signings and still had a couple key RFAs to sign.

We have 22 roster players, $9.2m in cap space and Pietrangelo and Stewart to sign. Trading Halák for a pick and moving Aucoin to the AHL means that we have our 23 man roster and no issue with the cap when it comes to signing our RFAs.

I know you don't have issues with the cap. Just curious what the thinking is with signings. Are they filling needs?

We are pretty confused about it too. Aucoin made sense because we needed to sign a depth forward. When we missed out on Weiss and Filppula, signing Lapierre made sense because it meant Sobotka could play #3C. Signing Roy makes the signing of either Lapierre or Aucoin redundant.

Unless Armstrong has trades up his sleeve, it looks like he panicked after missing his first choice centres and went to Lapierre.

Somebody has to explain to me how Ryan Clowe is so much better than Drew Stafford and why I should be excited about him. I'd also like to know how Clarkson became the second coming.
So much junk on the market this year. Just crappy second tier players, every one of them.
I think Darcy is just waiting to see who he can grab on one year, maybe two yes deal. My gut tells me he wouldn't offer three to anyone.

Clowe is a much better player, also built for the playoffs. Stafford disappears in the playoffs.

Doesn't change the fact that it's a garbage contract.
