Do they usually use a formula based on the height and weight of the goalie to determine his individual maximum pad size?

It used to be unlimited.

Then it was a 38" max (unless you got a waiver because you were really tall).

Then a year or two ago it became the point about halfway between the hip and the top of the knee, IIRC.

Now they are talking about moving it closer to the knee.

The hope is that making the thigh rises shorter it will open up the 5-hole, thus leading to more goals.

The issue with making legs pads smaller is that while it does reduce the area the pads cover, it makes them even lighter and allows goalies to be more mobile. I know when I went from the old spec 12" wide pads to 10" wide pads that it made things a lot easier to me and I would never want to go back to the wider pad.

But, I do love me some tall pads to help close the 5-hole.

One change that I haven't heard mention that I think would be very interesting would be covering the Chest & Arm units with the hard plastic material that covers shin pads and the old elbow pads. That would make it harder to control rebounds from shots that hit a goalie in the chest and the arms.....

We traded him to Florida. He was then (in June) traded from Florida to Nashville for Bobby Butler... Nashville declined to qualify him, making him an UFA - he then signed a deal with Toronto when free agency opened.

Yeah, Seth Jones' selection left Brennan without a roster spot so Nashville didn't qualify him. Isn't that old news? I swear it's come up in here before....

That clears up my question as to why he is listed as a UFA at the end if his last contract on capgeek but he's now a RFA again.

What's the deal with Grabo still out there? I thought he would have been scooped up by now. Did his rant scare teams off? I can't imagine it would.

Right - a little odd seeing him listed as restricted after signing a deal as a UFA, but that's how it goes for fringe nhlers

Last week we were told that Grabo was down to three teams. I may or may not believe that, but ultimately, any team that is interested in his services has a glaring hole on the roster that likely won't be filled by other free agents. I can't name many teams to fit that bill besides Winnipeg who admittedly dropped out.

I think the rant will give risk-averse GM's pause. There has also been some scuttlebutt that he's still seeking around what he was making from the Leafs pre-buyout, and with so many teams pushing the cap limit already, if someone is interested they hold up may be that the team in question has to clear cap space.

Miller's close friend JM Liles could be bought out this weekend if the Leafs find no takers for his new 3 year deal. I suspect GM's are sitting on their hands waiting for Nonis to have to make the buyout move rather than give up anything for that contract, thus enabling them to negotiate their own, more cap friendly short-term deal.

I wouldn't trade a Riley Boychuk for him.

Let our division foe take the buyout caphit for the next 6 years. Can't imagine they will do this.....but they are kinda stuck.
