And last season ended later than usual, so this short off-season seems even more strange.

Nick Kypreos must have calculated this average too

NHL Public Relations ‏@PR_NHL 15h
Goalie pads will be reduced by approximately 10% this season. On average, this represents a 2"- 2.5" (inch) reduction.

The length of the pads above the knee are specific to each goalie and has nothing to with the pads themselves. Goalies aren't losing 10% of the total length of their pads. They are losing 10% of the percentage allowed above the knee. It was 55% of the distance from the center of the knee to the pelvis, now its 45%. The league average is 20inches from the center of the knee to the pelvis. A goalie that would lose 3" from their pads would need that distance to be 30 inches. That would be one freakishly large goalie.

Quote:
The previous rule, instituted prior to the 2010-11 season, was that a goalie's leg pads could not go higher on his leg than 55 percent of the distance between the center of his knee and his pelvis. So if a goalie's upper-leg measurement was 20 inches, which is roughly the average number in the NHL, the pad could not go higher than 11 inches above the center of his knee.
That number will now be 45 percent, so the same goalie will be able to wear a pad that goes no higher than 9 inches above his knee.

I know what the Kypreos thing is just not how it applies to this situation.

Yes, plus IIRC from when I took statistics a looong time ago:
2"-2.5" (is a range)
2.25" (is an average)

Yes? The change is not based on total pad length. See my previous post. I can pretty much guarantee few, if any, will be losing 3inches off their pads.

As for the stats comments. meh. They guy misspoke but his math is correct on the likely pad changes. Kypreos can't do math. I don't see the similarity.

NHL.com right now says there are two games going on simultaneously between Phoenix and LA. They're both at different times on the game clock, and have different scores.

Glitch or are they trying something bizarre out there? I could see filling up two lineups with training camp invitees.

EDIT: Never heard of this before, but apparently they've done it before. "The Coyotes open their preseason with a split-squad matchup with the rival Los Angeles Kings that will be played simultaneously at the two teams’ arenas in Los Angeles and Glendale."

That would be kind of cool to do.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: Nothing set in stone just yet, but if all goes well, UFA G Tim Thomas could show up today in FLA on a PTO.

The drama queen is at it again

@benkuzma: Tortorella when a camerman's cell chimed Monday: "That's going to be a major-league fine. If cell phones go off, I'll walk." #canucks

Holy crap

http://deadspin.com/the-florida-pant...pre-1327111553

I thought maybe this was a scrimmage or something...nope, its a real preseason game.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/boxscore.htm?id=2013010012

Not sure who the marketing genius who scheduled the game at 2:30 on a monday....but wow. You'd expect at least a few thousand to come out and catch the game...even in a bad market.

Buffalo boy and former Amerks MVP goaltender David Leggio sees action in Washington and wins in a shootout although he was scored on all three times during the game he stopped all 4 shooters in the shootout.

Leggio's new Caps/Bears mask is sweet and I love the backplate repping Buffalo & CU.

Even the best can be crap with the fluidity of the NFL salary structure. I've done some digging and haven't been all that satisfied myself.

RNH resigns with Oilers. 7yrs & 42 million = 6 million average

@RealKyper: Confirmed #Oilers RNH #NHL contract extension is worth 42m over 7 yrs.
Paying for potential. Seems steep for an oft injured youngster.

Love. And those guys fought three times that game. If the NHL wants to eliminate fighting entirely...good luck.

An interesting look at what effects the shallower nets could have this season.

They can and they will eliminate staged fighting. This rule will most likely be tweaked. Add the mandatory visors for new players clause and it will tumble even more. Teams will keep a fighter around for the occasional team with skilled tough guys but it wont amount to much more than them skating a few laps for 0:43 seconds of ice time. Just a few years ago Buffalo and Detroit were the only 2 teams without a heavyweight on their roster. Now Buffalo is one of the few teams to have one.

Spur of the moment fighting will always be around but staged fighting will be all but gone in 5 years. Even fighting at lower professional ranks seems to be dying off as more and more teams are gaining full control of their AHL and even ECHL affiliations.
