I'm guessing you're in your 70s?

The guy doesn't belong in the NHL anymore.

Congratulations, Islanders fans! I think you have some exciting things going on with your plans of building a successful team, and obviously this was a big step in the right direction.

With the young players getting more years behind them, the Islanders no longer need his salary to reach the floor. But I think that this is more a hockey decision than a business one...he just wasn't ever available to play.

Guaranteed 1.5 mil income for 16 years? DiPietro is SET. Dude... you're on Long Island... open an Italian restaurant and call it a day.

I wish him all the best, and would be happy to see him in the front office, but I do not want him to be the Isles goalie coach.

Yes its true that he is "set" but he did everything he could to earn the money. Its not like he sat on his arse and collected the money or played poorly bc he just sucked. DiPietro, whether you like him or not, was a very talented goaltender. The amount of surgeries and rehabs he did just to try to get back should be something people acknowledge instead of mock. How many guys would have multiple surgeries on both hips, his face, his knees, and im sure theres others im forgetting, and still come back? He couldve retired due to injury long ago and collected the loot. He committed to LI when nobody else would. He wanted to help turn it around, not slouch and collect a big payday.

DP may be set money-wise, but his life was hockey. Its easy to say, just sit back and collect it, but when everything youve ever known is taken away, i dont think the money helps much.

That said, i hope he gets a color commentator job or something. Hes charismatic and well spoken, so it could work out for him.

Man am I eating some crow right now.

Before the buyout period, I predicted that no big contract (Vinny, DiPietro, Bryz etc.) would be bought out. Too much money involved and you have to replace the guy on the roster and .

So, I'll have a side of crow with my crow and it's crow sauce. Oh, and a crow pie for dessert, please!

What a huge day for Islanders fans!

In other news they currently have no goalies under contract...

Those two pictures are such a contrast of an amazing young athlete to someone that looks like a shell of their former self.

Quit hockey Rick and get healthy. It's such a shame that injuries killed this guy's career. You can see he had such a passion for the game.

I believe he signs somewhere as a back up. Near league minimum. I am really rooting for this guy. Yeah he has mad a fortune, but he is a human being that clearly has gone through a lot over the last eight years or so.

I am glad the isles are buying him out. I hope he finds his passion again. Hell I would love him on the Preds as Rinne back up.

He looks like he should rent the Tim Thomas bunker and hide out a while. I hear it might become vacant.

No, you wouldn't. I admire and respect DP for everything he's had to overcome, but he's done. The injuries have robbed of him of his athleticism which is what he relied on, he was was never very good positionally. He's no longer an NHL caliber goalie, doubtful he's good enough for the AHL either.

Happy for Isle fans and Ricky, he always came across as a team guy despite the circumstances.

He has got him money now and can do whatever he wants in life.

Hope he finds another gig and stays a little healthier. I remember how great he was at the IIHF WC in 2005, we were really lucky to defeat the US in the shootout. DP was amazing there
