If anything, Jenner is only going to become a 3rd line guy, maybe weak 2nd line. He's fit more into the grinder type than the scoring type, which is perfectly fine, just not calder material. He'll put up 15-20 goals on average, and really excel defensively IMO.

Calder is a one season award. What that player ends up as or averages doesn't really matter. Not sure why we care so much about it to begin with.

Which of the rookies this year will get top line minutes and quite possibly stay on the first line?

Jenner will start the season on the 1st line with Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky. They've been absolutely tearing it up in the preseason. There's no guarantees that success will continue into the regular season, but he's in a position that he could put up huge numbers.

I just don't think he's the type of player that will score 30+ goals. There's plenty of top-line players who play with scorers yet only score 20-25 goals max.

Scheifle, Chiasson, MacKinnon, Barkov, Nichushkin, Baertschi, Trouba have all been mentioned a fair amount and all have a good chance.

My pick is Tomas Hertl. Big kid brings everything you want to the ice. Likely playing with Thornton and Burns. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 30/30 year with strong physical play.

Hertl will be on what I consider our 2nd line with Joe Thornton and Brent Burns. He's not likely to be sent down.

Hertl and Nichuskin.

Trouba and Reilly will both get top 4 minutes.

Initially i thought Sven would be getting top 6 minutes and loads of PP time, but i suspect he gets sent down sometime this year, Burke isnt happy with his game so far.

Morgan Rielly isn't even playing in the first game, is he?

I think Sven Baertschi will have the biggest chance to succeed, and is in a good position to do so. Probably him.

Funny, I don't see either Trouba or Reilly getting top-4 minutes.

Chiasson is currently in Dallas' top six, not Nichushkin.

how often do calder winners score 30+ goals? because this thread was about this season's calder winner and if Jenner can hold his place in the first line he will have no doubt great shot at the calder. many good rookies this season but many of them will be getting 3rd line minutes.

Clitsome is hurt so Trouba is starting in the top-4 of tonights game. He'll be playing with Bogosian.

I somehow doubt anyone actually considers playing #4 minutes due to an injury to be "playing top-4 minutes" when speaking in the context of an award unless said injury is of the long term sort.

I think that Trouba will only get top-4 minutes if he performs at a very high level. Once Clitsome is back, I think he'll play more on a third pairing. But he'll likely get a fair bit of PP time, and if his strong play from pre-season carries over, he could certainly make his way into the top 4 this year.

By the way, what's up with Ryan Murray this season? Where does he sit in the depth chart? Has he seen pre-season action, and if so, how has he performed? It seems odd that the consensus #1 D from the 2012 draft hasn't been mentioned more here.

I meant scoring 30 goals in his prime. He'll only score around 10-15 this year IMO.

The question has to be asked "Why is Columbus playing a rookie who has long been projected to be a third line forward or second line tweener, regardless of his ridiculous junior numbers, on the first line to start the season?"

It's quite possible that projection may be out of date.
