Hart and/or Art ross finalist and conn smythe b/c we win the cup as well in that scenario. Then if you've accomplished all your goals I think it's actually right to show loyalty and keep the guy unless he wants more money in which case he'll want a buyout next year. But yea 90+ point season and a conn smythe/cup win.

I don't care about the reg. Season as much. If he is a beast in the playoffs, wins the Smythe, and we get the Cup, keep him forever.

Thanks Kershaw. I wouldn't as well but that cap hit on Richards limits the Rangers so much. I actually think Sather is gambling here. Next year, not only do we need to placate Henrik Lundqvist, Callahan is also a pending UFA as well as Girardi. SIGH!

how could you not retain a Brad Richards who scores 85 points in a season? That is good enough to be a top-10 player. His cap hit would be a steal at that. The question is if he can do that year to year but if he does it one year, I think the best thing you could do then would be to trade him while his stock is really high.

It's going to take an absolute miracle season for him to avoid the buyout.

This is a guy who was benched in two consecutive elimination games. I'd be shocked if he managed to pull his head out of his ass.

I really don't get it, either. I realize the potential ramifications, too. I guess I wanted to see the stigma against Richards after last season. 96% of people are voting to buyout a 33/34 year old PPG forward on a 6.66 mil contract here who just had a good/great playoffs on a team that went to the Finals.

I guess I'm asking what exactly that is. I gave my definition, but it's not enough for 96% of people.

Just for reference, in 2011 my numbers would put him 4th in playoff scoring and 4th in regular season scoring.

The hypothetical season you mentioned in your OP sounds pretty good to me. If he can find it in himself to do that, then perhaps sticking with him can work.

hockey is not all about point totals. Depends on how Richards puts up the points. Is he going to be AV Sedin sheltered type player who starts 80% of shifts in offensive zone?

He'll probably put up around 30 points, 25 of which will be whatever secondary assists.

Agree with this. Richards actually manged to rack up some good projected totals the past season. He just looked horrible while doing it.

I forget where the analysis is from, but that doesn't matter too much. Wasn't the shift start thing proven to add about 2-3 points to the Sedins' totals?

I don't seem to recall. But the Sedins did have their peak years with 70%+ starts in offensive zone, Kesler had near 50% and Malhotra was around 10-20%. Sedins benefited greatly from great center depth as did Kesler, Malhotra the other way around.

Regardless he will be a casualty of the new buy out rules.

Well, I guess it was a behind the back, no look pitch to Vinny that Philly intercepted and is now going the other way.

In order for the Rangers to not buyout Richards, he needs to play like he's going to be able to maintain his level until he's 39, which doesn't seem likely. Top10 in the league in points and maybe he doesn't get bought out. Anything else and it was a nice, short, and lucrative stint with the Rangers.

Great article, did not know that . Depends on Richards in-depth advanced stats too heading into next season. We'll see if he is a detriment at ES. Even if he matches his numbers the past say 5 seasons, he wouldn't be worth it imo.

Now that we're on another thread, I'd just like to express my complete frustration that the new CBA contains something in it that punishes what was legal in the last CBA. It's just... wrong... on so many levels. Bugs me. Would bug me even if we didn't have one of those contracts.

I wish it were that simple. It's never that simple with Sather.
