Fan 590 called it a compliance buyout.

If this gives us room to sign all of our RFAs and a few UFAs perhaps its all good.

All reports I've seen have it as a compliance buyout so it wouldn't matter in that case as we'll now have close to $20M this season to work with.
20m ? How's that possible ?

Our total cap space would go to 20m with Komi gone.

Lots of RFA's to sign this year...Phanuef, Kessel, Kulemin UFA's next year. In reality we don't have a ton of cap room.

Why is the title saying this is a compliance buy out----I thought it was the old fashioned buyout

$3.5M means a ap hit of $1.167M the next 2 years.

No, that's not the case but I'm sure 7 other people have said this already.

I haven't seen anyone other than people on here say it's an ordinary buyout.

But it opens up the door for next year to buy out Grabo/Liles with compliance buyouts should they fail to produce.
Not next year as Komisarek in the minors = $3.575M cap hit.

So a cap saving of a bit more than $1.4M.

Media has dropped the ball reporting this.

Regular buyout = decent
Compliance buyout = misstep

Yet nobody seems to care to mention which it is.

Wish Mike nothing but the best and hope he can catch on for another NHL team. He may not have worked out on the ice (though he did show flashes of being quite good at times) he was always a good guy and teammate.

Plus. I can always respect him for this.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have used a compliance buyout on defenceman Mike Komisarek removing his contract from their salary cap and making him an unrestricted free agent.

According to nhl.com, it's a compliance buyout.

There goes the theory of saving the compliance buyouts as trade baits (for at least one of them).

Silly theory to begin with. The NHL won't allow it. The only thing they're saving the other compliance buyout for is to see if Grabovki and JML underperform next season.

the NHL wouldnt allow teams to trade a player to the leafs, have him complianced, and then re-sign with the original team.

i think they would still allow teams to trade their cap-dumps to toronto to have toronto do the compliance buyout.

It's about time.

Komisarek should find a new home. I'd say anywhere between $1.5M-$2M per would be reasonable for him. Still should be a serviceable bottom-pairing defensive defenseman and most teams could use the extra grit he brings. He's only 31.

I'd much rather have seen the Leafs use a regular buyout here though. Not too high of a cap hit for him for the next two seasons. They'd then have the two compliances to use on Liles and Grabovski if need be. Now they can only use one and the other is kind of stuck there.

After seeing the deals Striet and Gonchar signed, I'm sure Liles could be traded for decent value, at least what we gave up for him.

Man oh man did he ever. I hope they don't make the mistake of buying out Grabo. Put this guy on the second line with either Lupul or JVR and we'll see him back to his 25g 25a self.

A 2nd is a little rich, but I think we could deal him as a dump (i.e. the immense value in taking in no bad salary).

True but the reason for it was to enforce parity, so that certain teams couldn't flex their financial muscle outside of the salary cap. The league still has the option to veto trades so until I see a team ship a buyout candidate + assets for scraps I won't believe the league will allow t.
