The problem is that he has had a hard time even making the Leafs when they were one of the very worst defensive teams in the league. Ballard is better.

Hmm, did not expect this buyout to be ordinary rather than compliance. Nonis must have something up his sleeve.

He obviously does, he's been antsy to make moves for weeks now. You can tell in his interviews usually he holds his cards close to his vest but lately he's been very open about making moves and improving the club. I wouldn't be shocked at all if we hear about a signing or a trade in the next 24-48 hours.

It would've been dumb to use a regular buy-out on him especially when Nonis is obviously going to be a player in free agency.

If he likes the Great White North, Mk would slot in nicely on either Cal/Edm backend.Lord knows they need help

All you saying 'waste' of a compliance buyout are just being ridiculous. They won't buy out Grabovski when they can reatain 1.5 and get value for him.

Ballard just didn't fit in the system square peg in a round hole. This is without even considering the fact if Ballard stayed in Vancouver he'd be making 4.2 million opposed to Komisarek who would probably cost 1 Million.

Not sure if it's a fit, but it would be nice to see him play for a guy like Hitchcock. Total character guy, unfortunate circumstance in Toronto. I hope he gets a look with a team with a good defensive style where he can excel.

Enjoy looking back over the original Toronto Free-Agent signing thread, it's fun to see how 1) Habs fans (like myself) were ready to fire Gainey, and 2) Leafs fans were arguing he was a steal.

Both were both wrong.

If indeed true, then that sucks.

Either way, it still doesn't make sense to use a compliance buy-out on Komisarek when he only had one year left on his contract. They would have been better off just using a regular buy-out on him and then use a compliance buy-out on Liles (who has multiple years left on his contract)

Doing it this way would open up two contract slots and save nearly $6 million in cap space (which could then both be used on other assets).

At least Komisarek is no longer a Leaf, when all is said and done.

He played well in his few games I thought, just didn't fit in.
