I wouldn't have a problem overpaying for Clarkson. Cause he's a type of players we need. I'm watching the Devils and for years I could not understand why Lou was overpaying for guys like Zubrus and Rolston but he was doing it for two reasons: cause he had to overpay for them to stay in NJ, secondly they were the type of players he felt he needed on his club. Zubrus had size and had some skills and frankly that is rare, even if he wasn't stellar at anything, really.

I'd be all to overpay Clarkson, by overpaying a mean over a 20 goals scorer with a load of sandpaper, cause himself he's worth 4M$ for an NHL team. Goal scorer who can scrap are worth gold.

The thing about Clarkson though is he is 29 now and only started scoring big these past couple seasons. Is this the norm or an anomaly? I would overpay but it might take a huge overpayment.

5 Years at 5 millions would be the max I would offer though.

Here's my rank of players to go after

Nathan Horton
Rob Scuderi
David Clarkson
Jarome Iginla
Dustin Penner
Stephen Weiss
Valterri Filpulla
Jaromir Jagr
Tyler Bozak
Derek Roy
Daniel Briere
Mike Ribeiro
Brad Boyes
Clarke MacArthur
Viktor Stalberg
Damien Brunner
Mason Raymond

I obviously wouldn't break the bank on many. Would truly target Horton and Scuderi

Stalberg interests me, mostly because he's versatile in where he can play in the line up and would be inexpensive. I think there needs to be room for the young kids to come up on the offense and the defense needs some work.

This team really isn't that far away IMO.

I'd do 5 years $25mil for Clarkson in a second. I think he's exactly what we need

Even if he really wants/gets 5,5M-6M+ per year on a 5-6 years deal? Seems quite a bit for him, even if he's a really good player.

Nah, like I said, I am not breaking the bank on any of these players. We have 9 million in cap space.. I'm not going over 5 million for any player and I don't really think any one on the market is truly worth that coin.

thats more of a future oriented lineup. you add key pieces to your core and even then you still end up with a solid lineup, much grittier than our current one.. and were not even sacrificing that much skill. chiasson is going to be a stud and fraser is a solid 2-way player that pretty much does everything and he still has untapped offencive upside

also leaves us with close to 10M in caproom for future signings

Makes sense. Horton is THE guy we should get, but I don't believe that it's realistically something we can manage to do.

I'm confused. If free agency starts the 5th why are teams talking to players beforehand? I understand VL as he was bought out but Horton, Alfredsson? I thought it was tampering to do it before they hit UFA status.

I wonder if it's even slightly possible to woo the Pens to trade Simon Despres? I'm a huge fan of his. Guess we'd have to give up way too much though, but that's a future oriented trade obviously.

I'd definitely rank them similar and agree with your two targets. From what I read though Horton is looking to go to a small market team; or at least one where he can be more anonymous. So I'd target Clarkson and/or see if I can get Clowe on the cheap.

Scuderi is the dman I want, think he would be a good partner for Subban. What's the latest news on him?

Gerbe is available and would fit right in with Briere.

New rule in the CBA. Teams can talk to upcoming UFA's 48 hours before free agency begins.

As of 12:00am today all UFA's are allowed to talk to teams but not sign until 12:00PM on friday. New rule this year
