Just so you know. Free agency is not the only way to acquire a defenseman.

Eager got benched/demoted b/c he didn't want to play the "enforcer" role the Oilers wanted him to play... not unlike Moen (except we didn't demote him as a result). He was very effective in his 4th line role with the Hawks (in their last cup season) & is a better skater/more physical than moen.

very low risk, with upside better than what Moen will give us over the duration of his contract IMO.

Morrow is far from done. That's just silly. Just as 1 good playoff run doesn't "make" a player, nor does a bad one "break" a player.

He's "done" if you expect a 30g 60pt player, sure, but as a gritty, hard working leader that can play a strong 2-way game while having good enough hands to complement our best 2-way C in plekanec... i'd say he's a perfect fit IN THAT PRICE RANGE (3-3.5M$).

I want him in montreal...

The defense is the same that helped us win the division and finish 2nd in the conference... i don't know that "terrible" is anything more than a silly over-exaggeration.

I don't see any of the "top" UFA defensemen (and really, the market is bare this year) anywhere near worth the market premium they will fetch. A reclamation project to keep the seat warm until Emelin is ready to go is the best-case-scenario barring a major trade.

Komisarek, of the reclamation projects out there, is probably the best fit both in terms of need (physical dman who can clear the crease & who can complement Markov by playing ultra-conservative) and familiarity.

Morrow playing 13-14min/game ES, with Pleks & Bourque, focused on a primarily defensive match-up role, is perfectly in his wheel house, and imo an upgrade over Gionta in the same role (while freeing up Gallagher to go back to a line with Eller-Galchenyuk to prey on opposing teams 3rd-4th lines).
What year are you living in? Komi is useless and could not make the Leafs. Morrow did not even dress all the Pens playoff games and you want him on the top line. His body is broken. Ask Edmonton fans about Belanger and Eager. Both useless. Thankfully you are not our GM.

Why not a guy like Coburn for a pick or prospect?

I hear Nathan Gerbe has good character. He's about to be bought out by the Sabres.

He filled out the bill. Strong two-way that we don't have.

He would be a sweet pick up, not sure the Flyers will ship him to a team in the East though

Not a big deal under realignment. Habs and Flers play each other 3 times (vs 2 for Western conf.) and then playoffs are divisional format, so unless as a wildcard they wouldn't meet until the conference final.

As per Tsn:

Kekalainen told the Columbus Dispatch that a scoring forward is definitely on his shopping list, but that they're more interested in skill over size.

“If you ask anybody, they'd take a 6-5 guy who scores 30 goals over a 5-8 guy who scores 30 goals,” Kekalainen told Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch. “But me personally, I prefer the small guys who play with big heart to the big guys who are less passionate.”.

I'm not really one who wants Gionta gone but he sounds like exactly what Kekalainen is looking for. Any interesting players in Columbus?

I agree. He does not get traded to us however. Philly will not do business with us. Smid in Edmonton is a guy that is intriguing. Less offensive upside than Coburn but hits a ton and is a competent defender. Rumours out of Edmonton are that MacT is not a fan of Smid even though he was one of the better players on a bad team.

If we can dump a smurf on CBJ, let's dump DD; Gionta's almost gone anyway (1 year left)...

Why on earth not? As I posted above, they will meet 3 times a year, compared with 2 in the West, and playoff seedings are no longer by conference.

lol. I think plenty of posters either don't understand or overlook the negatives about a players' relative loss of privacy in Montreal.

We need to target guys who thrive in the spotlight, or else masters of disguise.

Boll and Wisniewski. Although Wiz has an albatross contract at the moment.

1. Savvy vet D with size to replace Emelin and add depth when he's back.
2. Bigger, more physical replacements for Halpern and Armstrong for the fourth line.
3. Top six/nine winger that is an upgrade on skating, grit, and two way play from Ryder.
