Cheap Young Projects Hitting the Market

Well if the big names are out of the question, any younger players that are down on their luck, looking for a second (or third) chance, worth considering in Detroit?

Good young players like Pominville, Grabner or even Quincey hit waivers before becoming NHL staples.

remember a young Daniel Cleary eight year ago, thought to be down and out of the NHL, before walking on to the Wings in camp and becoming a mainstay.

Just searching the trash heap and it looks like the following guys were either not qualified or bought out/terminated and set to become UFA's.

F Jack Skille (26)
F Sergei Kostitsyn (26)
D Theo Peckham (25)
D Jonathan Blum (24)
F Nathan Gerbe (25)
D Yannick Weber (24)
F Benoit Pouliot (26)
F Peter Mueller (25)
F Matt Halischuk (25)
D Keaton Ellerby (24)
D Colton Teubert (23)
F Akim Aliu (24)

Some decent talent that could still get their careers on track and probably for low cap hit numbers.

Mueller, Blum, and Peckham jump out at me.

Would definitely take a flyer on Mueller and Blum, but with the roster jam they have I don't see how they can fit either of them in.

Blum and Pouliot interest me. After that... Meh.... Unfortunately... No roster spot for either available.

Ha, my bad Eternal.
I posted this in the wrong thread by accident... causing you to have to moderate.
No worries you get first post by looks of things!

I 've always likes Skille and Mueller. But we don't need checkers, so that rules out Skille.

I personally think Pouliot will get some legit offers.
If Detroit could land him on the cheap, I would be all for that move. You can use him up and down the lineup. Not a stretch to use him as a scoring line winger.
I'd also like to add Peckham for Depth and toughness on the backend.

Do we even have any room for a project defenseman or forward? I don't think we can add anything that isn't going to be top 6 forward or top 2 defense. We would just stunt the growth of the players we have. There just aren't enough roster spots or minutes to go around. I would love to dump Clear,Bert,Sammy,Lash etc. For someone with upside but I don't see it happeninfo.

Not likely, but if Cleary and Brunner leave and we somehow shed Sammy, you never know.

Mueller and Pouliot pretty much have to be top 6 to be effective players anyway. Same might be said for Kostitsyn.

Sergei Kostitsyn, Jonathan Blum, Peter Mueller, and Keaton Ellerby would definately interest me. Kostitsyn would be a gamble but if Detroit could get him motivated again and playing well, he could be an interesting linemate with Pavel.

I think we can make room up front. Add Emmerton and probably Tootoo to the dump list, and there are ample spots that could be opened up. We also don't have quite the pressure from GR forward wise that we have on the blueline. Sheahan, Ferraro, or Jarnkrok could make the jump, but they could also probably use a full year in GR. So, bringing in a guy like Mueller wouldn't be holding someone back as much as bringing in a project for the blueline.

Good point. I wouldn't mind seeing how SK would look playing with Pavs.

Weren't the Wings rumored to be in trade talks for Blum, either this year or last? He has some offensive potential to him, wouldn't mind the wings picking him up.

Blum, Mueller and Ellerby interest me.

Halischuk is another name I am surprised to see out there. Guy scores some big time goals, was impressive when down in Milwaukee.

Would love too pick up Blum. Would be a way better option as a 7th defensemen than Lashoff. Lashoff sucks.

Blum didnt crack Nashvilles top 6 or even top 7 for a reason. The best player or D there is probably Ellerby but even then he's not an upgrade on anything we have. Rest of them are pointless.

I think we should start by signing all of them.

Then, package them in groups of 2-4; with low round draft picks (4-7). Always try to get multiple draft picks back. We'll need them for later if we're going to convince the computer to keep letting us trade up.

Now it's going to take a few hours, but eventually, by going through all 29 other teams we should be able to turn these guys and 6 of our draft picks into Malkin, Gardiner and every pick in round 1 of the 2014 draft.

It's like Kenny doesn't even own a ****ing Playstation.

He played 35 of 48 games this year. Pretty sure that's cracking the top six. I also like how you mention Ellerby after that statement. The same Ellerby who couldn't crack Florida's top six and was traded for a FIFTH round pick. Pretty sure Florida has a much worse defence than Nashville.

I wouldn't mind Sergei Kostitsyn, Jonathan Blum, or Peter Mueller in a Wings jersey.
I feel each one has shown flashes of something worthwhile, but they haven't quiet figured out how to put it all together and they're still young enough to figure it out with the right help.
