Derek Roy

A few questions on Derek Roy.

What is he worth in $? He was paid $5.5m last year with a $4m cap hit.
Can he play wing?
How was his form last year ? From both Cancucks and Stars fans

Also curious from a STL standpoint. The numbers look good for our needs at center, but can this guy be a legit 1st line center or a really good 2nd line. What is he likely to get?

Started out promising with Canucks then fizzled out. There were games when you didn't notice him and some he was non factor I would say offer him shirt term contract

Well. He can produce, but in our case he quite simply dissapeared in the playoffs. Provide nothing a team like St. Louis would be interested in. He's going to get paid a lesser team to produce in the regular season.

Thanks. By your description, he should fit in here perfectly.

What this guy said.

He went from a bit of flash to completely invisible.

The most I would give him is 3 x 3. And I think 3 years is even pushing it.

Send a message via AIM to Devils Trap
Any chance his prior ties with Pete Deboer could get him to sign in NJD

Anything from Stars fans?

Also, from Stars/Sabres/Canucks fans, has he ever played wing?

edit: Google tells me that Roy played some wing in Buffalo in 2007 (on a line with Drury) and last season on a line with Kesler.

When we acquired him, many Canuck fans were looking for ways to fit his cap hit into the line-up for this season. Generally speaking, you will not find him in any Canuck line-ups anymore. As others have said he started well, kind of fizzled, and was completely invisible in the playoffs. Granted it was a 4 game sample size, but he literally did nothing to help us. The guy did seem to develop instant chemistry with Higgins from day 1, the pair of them looked very dangerous. So in Roy's defence, good ol' AV decided to separate the two of them in the playoffs for some unknown reason.

He played wing next to Kesler a bit, and he looked fine in that role to me. He does seem to play better as a center though to the extent that Kesler was used on Roy's wing more often then the other way around.

Showed a few glimpses of brilliance but overall seemed invisible night after night. This isn't the type of player you want to build a contender with.

Hes a good player that creates offense and can make things happen when he has the puck.

In Vancouver he wasn't really put in the best position to succeed, when he was a center he was a 3rd line center, when he was in the top 6 he was winger or switching with Kesler.

On a team like Nashville, St.Louis or Toronto, exc. Where he would get top billing I think he could succeed.

Makes his teammates better offensively and though he wasn't producing I still thought there were times in the playoffs that he was making things happen offensively and the puck just wasn't going in. We really didn't alot of breaks in the playoffs, and I don't think he was really that bad. Atleast he didn't stand out as being bad or anything.

He is also responsible defensively. I think he would work for a team in need of an offensive center, since he has proven he can put up 1st line production.

He never played wing in Dallas, that much I can tell you.

Roy could be a fantastic 2nd line center if, and I mean if.....

The team has size/grit on the team. Forgetting the Stars, both the Sabres and Canucks are/were two of the softest teams in the league. So counting on Roy to be anything but an offensive center will be failure for your team.

After many years in Buffalo, I don't know if Roy has the inner drive to be a difference maker, he's more of a party boy off the ice, and go through the motions on the ice.

Glad he's gone from Buffalo.

For me, it'll be really interesting to see how much he signs for. I think if anything, he's the bargain to be had for centres, simply because there are teams who need a centre, but won't show any interest in him, because they don't have the size on the wings to make him successful. Same goes for Ribeiro.

In Dallas his 2 way play was fine and his offense was just OK. I'd be wary of too big a commitment, but I would have him back on a show me 1 year deal.

He's small, slow, didn't seem to have any special offensive skill.. I can't see him being much of an offensive factor at this point. He was just okay. Not a liability by any means but doesn't add much either. I was very disappointed in his game.

This is the type of player I can see Nashville picking up after missing out on their bigger named targets.

If he wants to win and take a smaller contract Chicago is where he should and will go, if he is chasing money he will go to a team far away from the cup.

The guy is terrified of getting hit. He was pretty frustrating at times with the Canucks. I personally don't want to see him back this coming season.

I believe there was a rumor during the regular season that Roy was seeking $5.5-6M per year on his next contract, so good luck to whoever is interested in him because he isn't worth that.

I am familiar with him from Buffalo....

He isnt a #1 center. He could play as one but that isnt an ideal role. He is a good #2 if his price is reasonable.

He had a bad injury in 2010/11 where he missed much of the season. In 11/12 He wasnt 100% from the injury until later in the year.

Last year he was on a similar pace point wise as 12/13.

He had problems with linemates in Vancouver.

A team looking to add a center should have serious interest.

good landing spots for him would be: Tampa Bay, Islanders, St Louis, Washington, and Anaheim He would give some veteran experience to teams like Nashville.

ideal salary would be something like a $3.25M-$3.75M per year

I know I'm in the minority here for Canucks fans but I quite liked Roy and I wish we had some cap space to give him a short term contract (which we absolutely do not). It's true that he disappeared in the playoffs but that's a grand total of 4 games so I don't think it's wise to put so much stock in that.

Roy looked really good when he was centering a line with Higgins in the regular season but when Kesler came back from injury, Higgins was mostly played alongside Kesler to try to get beast mode Kesler going, which makes sense and all, but Roy disappeared as a result.

From the sounds of things, Roy probably wants to be paid a little more than he's worth but if cap space isn't too much of an issue for you then he'd make a good 2nd or 3rd line center (just don't rely on him as a 1st line center). If nothing else, you can probably make like Dallas and trade him at the deadline for picks.
