We acquired him without giving up a first and a top three prospect? After that asking price less than a year or so ago that's a win.

Good contract length and price. I've always liked his physicality. Hopefully playing in Minnesota motivates him to revert to his old self instead of his Canuck self.

I am a big fan of the hip check as well. It's kind of a lost art in the NHL these days.

Outstanding signing for the Wild. I still believe he is a top 4 Dman for sure that was just treated terribly.

I thought he was our best defenseman this year until he got injured, then AV never gave him opportunity after that. Either way he was much better than Bieksa.

Congrats on the signing!

The biggest problem with his game in recent years is boneheaded penalties... coaching can help with that though, so we'll see.

Tonight and every night since Backstrom will sleep with one eye open. Jedi Knight Ballard will make sure of that

Great signing. Very low risk, possibly high reward as well.

Good luck in Minny Ballard!

He should be good for you guys. Arguably the best defenseman in the LA series and played solid throughout the first few games of the year....until randomly benched by AV.

As long as he plays with a steady stay at home defenseman you'll be more than happy.

Looking forward to seeing him mentor Dumba, as Matt's play reminds me of Ballard's before coming to Vancouver.

Minny fans, do him a favor when NY comes to your building and boo AV.

Here's some good news:

If you look at the Corsi rankings for Wild defensemen:

2010-11
1. Burns
2. Spurgeon
3. Scandella
4. Schultz
5. Zidlicky
6. Barker
7. Stoner
8. Falk
9. Zanon

2011-12
1. Gilbert
2. Foster
3. Stoner
4. Kampfer
5. Spurgeon
6. Prosser
7. Scandella
8. Falk
9. Lundin

2012-13
1. Spurgeon
2. Brodin
3. Gilbert
4. Falk
5. Suter
6. Prosser
7. Stoner

Falk, Stoner, and Prosser have generally been terrible. Actually, the entire Wild has been terrible at getting any offensive pressure so literally the only two players who ever had positive Corsi numbers have been Spurgeon and Brodin this past year.

I don't think Corsi is the best stat, but it's pretty useful when looking at players that are able to move the puck up ice vs running around in their end and letting the goalie get shelled.

Ballard finished:
2010-11 8 of 9
2011-12 7 of 8
2012-13 5 of 8

The first two years his offensive zone starts were towards the bottom of the defense, which means he was used in tough situations, which helps explain why his Corsi (and points) was so bad. But it's not like he was really setting the world on fire either.

I think if you look at Ballard as a #5/6 defenseman who will push Stoner and Prosser off the roster (I am assuming we are going to chase another defenseman), this will be good for the team. Falk luckily is gone. Some potential but the NHL isn't a development league. Stoner and Prosser need to be the next guys out the door if the Wild wants to compete.

Perhaps Fletcher knows he can't chase a bonafide #3 defenseman so he's going to add two solid bottom pairing guys, push Stoner and Prosser off, and then cross fingers on Spurgeon and Scandella. If those guys can put it together, we should have a nice defense where you don't have a couple pylons on the ice for 10-15 minutes a game. If not...

I know nobody here wants to break up the top pairing, and really neither do I, but, from what everybody is saying about Ballard is that he should be on the left side and with a "defensibly responsible partner". Is this a somewhat viable option...

Suter - Spurgeon
Ballard - Brodin
Scandella - FA Signing
Stoner
Prosser

At least to start the preseason and see how it goes? Or do we just not want to have to worry about the top pairing and try to fit the bottom 4 together the best we can?

I don't know.

I don't think anybody here wants to break up Suter-Brodin, but it sure did seem like Yeo kept wanting to go back to Suter-Spurgeon last season. I don't know, we'll see how it goes, but that could be an option to have a better all-around top 4 rather than having a great top pairing and average 2nd pairing, if that truly is the best way to maximize Ballard's potential.

It's an option, at the very least.

Brodin's going to make whoever he plays with better. Spurgeon, not so much. I think on paper that looks nice BUT I could see that top pairing becoming a real defensive mess.

This team has gone through so much roster turnover the last few years that I think they should just stick with something that has actually proven to be effective.

With that said, I do think Yeo will try to experiment with all the pairings.

scandella Suter? Didn't like Spurge with him at all.

I think Brodin will be able to maximize anyone he's paired with...Will you be better off setting him up with Suter and giving him another Norris discussion year or sacrificing that sort of production on the top pair to get more reliable minutes from the second?

Everyone has been saying Ballard plays much better on left side than right, but Russo said Ballard will be on the right side of Scandella (for now).

I'd assume that means:

Suter - Brodin
Scandella - Ballard
Stoner - Spurgeon

Which means we are negotiating $2-2.5m for a third pairing defenseman or putting Stoner on the second pairing.

Well to my eyes that looks like:

#1 pairing (25+ minutes)
#3a pairing (15+ minutes)
#3b pairing (15+ minutes)
