I think Stokes was referring in general to the tactic for many teams - which I do see being used. A lot of teams are trying to get their cap situations sorted out - if some miss the window for doing it through CBOs, I can see other teams trying to exploit that by trying to steal an RFA if they think the odds are strong that the player's team can't match.

But, as you said, I don't think the Sabres will use that tactic - even after they get Hodgson re-signed. Despite Black's assurances in the past that the Sabres "will try anything to improve their team", I don't think Regier will do anything to upset his rival GMs.

Obviously... he doesn't solve the center depth issue...
But he adds some speed, scoring, offense... and he's not a midget
I'd rather see Filppula be that guy - he brings those same 4 qualities and he is a center.

I look at Alfresson's decision in the same light as long-timers like Bourque and Iginla leaving their only franchise for a better chance to win a Cup before retiring. If Sens fans are in an uproar, they are losing sight that Alfredsson has been contemplating on retirement for the past two seasons. So the chance was always there that he'd be gone. Maybe the sting of seeing him play for a team that is now in Ottawa's division is valid but I respect Alfredsson's decision and don't see it as any betrayal of Ottawa.

gimme an idea what you are thinking here?

I'm actually ok with giving him stupid money, as long as it's not "very" long term.

I'd overpay in salary if i could get him for 2-3 years only

If they're willing to spend $4M on Stahlberg, pump that up $0.75M and see if Filppula is available instead.

me too... definitely. I think that's a pipedream though

I guess my viewpoint is becoming that the "quality" free agents that fill "more importnat" needs (top 6 scoring, center, shutdown skill, etc) are going to have more choices, and better "contending" destinations to choose from.

I still believe the Sabres could add some talent, while going through the rebuild.

Stallberg fits some needs, but he's not the type of player a contender usually has at the top of their list.

Any chance Ottawa pissed/disrespected Alfie in some way???

My dark horse is Rosivel. Scuderi n Ference are two others.

I'm all on board with upgraded lines 3-4 this offseason, they make us better, harder to play against

I agree. We're going to be no where close to the cap in the next couple years. Especially if we trade Miller and/or Vanek. We can afford to overpay a few players for a few years. In fact, that's our only selling point at this time.

Ew. Stalberg is Kotalik with speed instead of a slapper. He's that dumb. Not interested.

My thoughts are we should only be signing guys who are going to come in and push our younger players further down their development path. I could care less if they score or play more than 12 minutes a night.

Rozsi would be a good pickup if we didn't just add two righties. Him and Sekera were one of the shutdown pairings I was pondering before the draft.

Cullen is my gut feeling, similar to Rob Nieds not to long ago. Of course he is a slightly better than Nieds at that point

People on the main boards keep referring to Filppula apparently seeking $5.5 for 6-7 years. I don't know if that's just speculation or if it's based on anything, but I could see that being what he's seeking.

Hell, pump it up a bit more and just claim Grabbo on waivers.

Just sign someone semi decent. I have had to endure garbage and boring free agent periods by the Sabres for pretty much the last 15 years before Pegula got here. It's like the day before Christmas and while all the rich kids parents are buying them the expensive and cool toys (Detroit, NYR, Pittsburgh, Chicago) we are the poor kid with our face pressed up against the window wishing we could ever get one of those toys.

They kept benchmarking the Grabovski deal. Since that evaporated yesterday, coming down to the sane side of the $5M mark seems more palatable

.

Most of the toys aren't that good this year.

If I remember correctly, they were after him hard before he signed with Minnesota.

There aren't any elite ones like there was supposed to be (Perry, Getzlaf) but there are a lot of quality players out there that can help this team now and in the future. I'm not expecting Iginla but getting a 2nd/3rd line LW (even if Vanek doesn't leave we need one), a top 9 vet center to PK, take important draws and top def. coverage and possibly a big bruising bottom pairing dman. Even if we are going to suffer we don't need to be early 90s Tampa Bay Lightning bad.

I'll play:

Ribiero to Predators
Roy to Hawks
Clowe to Devils
Clarkson to Leafs

Iginla to Blues

Alfredsson is headed to Wings per reports at moment.

My gut still says Morrow to Sabres is a distinct possibility. If the Sabres looked at Briere, I could also see them making offer on Filppula.

I thought the salary predictions came out of Detroit from a beat writer, Ansar Khan.

For those who want to watch the full TSN coverage starting at noon but don't have TSN/NHL Network (syndicating TSN feed), you can use this stream that runs NHL Network 24/7: http://firstrowus.eu/watch/180482/1/...l-network.html

Other links that should work at noon are on here: http://firstrowus.eu/sport/ice-hockey.html (the "Free Agent Frenzy" ones)

I imagine that NHL.com will stream it as well
