We know they went after Edler and I'd assume that's still a possibility. There were also rumors a few days ago that Phaneuf is on the block.
i don't know about that now, but i think the chances are good holland will be active at around the deadline like he was a long time ago.
the prospects depth is damn deep, so i think the wings could gamble and try to get a bigger name at the deadline.

Agreed.

Anyone have an idea of what Toronto would want in return?

Apparently they offered Smith and picks. I wonder if Abdelkader was talked about/included.

Would be huge for our defense to get a guy who plays his style of hockey.

I guess it's possible that Holland made some sort of hint of that to Alfie in his pitch. I would expect them to wait until the deadline to see the progression of the young defensemen, though. I'm kind of apprehensive about trading a big chunk of value for a defenseman. We have a ton of potential on the blue line.It may come a time when we need to move defense for top line forward talent.

I saw another one too, but can't find it at the moment.. it mentioned "draft picks", but didn't clarify.

I guess I'll take a stab at my projected lineup.

Z-Pavel-Alfie
Franzen-Weiss-Gus/Tatar
Tatar/Gus-Helm-Sammy
Miller-Andersson-Abdelkader
Bertuzzi/Eaves

Kronwall-Ericsson
Dekeyser-Smith
Quincy-Kindl
Lashoff

Emmerton traded or waived, Tootoo traded for picks maybe (although I like Tootoo).

I just want to see Nyquist and Andy locked up and I'm great!

As much as I dislike Abdelkader in the top six, it'd be fun to see Helm centering Tatar and Nyquist (plus Babs loves to have at least one physical guy on each of the top 2 lines anyways). Something like:

Zet-Dats-Abs
Alfie-Weiss-Franzen
Tatar-Helm-Nyquist

Oh no, I definitely agree. Someone else mentioned this before as well (Frk it?), but there would be soo much speed with Tatar-Helm-Gus.

the only way i can see us getting morrow is if he signs a deal with a low cap and bonuses

one has to wonder will KH wait to see if some team that needs to hit the floor will take sammy

He can't only players on entry level contracts and veterans above 35 on 1 year contracts can sign deals with performance bonuses. Morrow is neither of those.

Don't Sammy and Bert have NTCs?

I'd consider trading Franzen -- but any cap penalties stay with Detroit

I like what I see so far. Weiss came affordably, and I think he'll look good as our #2, or even #3 if we want to run with Z and D centering the top two lines. Alfie is still productive, despite his age, and doesn't offer much risk on a one year deal. I wish we could have still found a way to hang onto Brunner, and had been more aggressive with the buyouts/trades in moving guys like Sammy, Bert, and Tootoo off the roster, but I'm really liking where this offseason has gone so far.

Yes, though Bert's is modified.

Agreed--I really think this helps bridge us over until our next wave of young players can get going (if they pan out like most of us are hoping). We avoided trading away youth and didn't get laden down with overly risky contracts. As long as Alfie and Weiss stay healthy, I think they'll work in well. Should be an exciting season... can't wait.

I am wondering if Bert (and Sammy?) will be on the LTIR though. We heard talk of a possible retirement, which obviously didn't materialize. He could've just worked out a similar "agreement" with the Wings that Pronger has. (i.e. With retirement he has a cap hit, on the LTIR, he doesn't, right?)

NTCs are comparatively easy to get around, you give the guy the option of riding the bus from Grand Rapids or do the right thing and accept the trade. It is the full NMC you have to worry about.

Well, LTIR means a team can go over the Cap up the amount of that players' salary, it doesn't remove the cap hit at all.

I think there is a reasonable chance Sammy will be on LTIR, we would be able to sign another player with a salary less than 3 million to fill his spot if we so choose.

If Bert can't go I think there is a chance he will bought out with a regular old buyout. It would cost about 700k this year and next on the cap, but would create some space. If he can play, I imagine he will be with the team as the 13th forward.

Might be just me, but I would've loved to go absolutely bat **** crazy and sign Vinny, Iginla and Jagr to go with Alfredsson.

Super old, super oldschool but damn it would've looked sweet on paper.

Datsyuk - Z - Alfredsson
Franzen - Lecavalier - Iginla
Nyquist - Helm - Tatar
Jagr - Andersson - Brunner

All offense, no penalty killing.

For some reason I laughed. It does look nice, though.

Bruce Lee is literally dead, Will Smith's son would be better, for some youth and energy.
