LOVE Gordon, I think he's a fantastic 4th line player, but wow. This is overpayment.

Are the Oilers in a good position cap wise? If so, this isn't THAT bad.
About 15 million under.

I hate to keep repeating it but the guy appeared on 12 writers selke ballots. That's not a fluke.

Oh, I don't disagree. Fantastic defensive player, just what the Oilers need.

The guy basically was given a home by the coach in his own end of the ice and still came out ahead in shot opportunities for.
Advanced stats say Tyler Kennedy's a possession player. He's not. What he does games what they measure. It's the same way with faceoff specialists.

If you put Boyd Gordon out against the best players in your new conference, you're going to have a problem if you lose possession between the time he wins the draw and the time his shift ends. Serviceable 4th liner even without the faceoffs, but he just isn't good enough to handle Kopitar (or whoever) getting possession in his zone. Not a defensive forward. Faceoff specialist.

If it makes you feel better, that's not true. He has a slightly negative Corsi.

i love gordon, hes probably the best fringe 3rd/4th line center in the nhl but he got overpaid by about 600k-700k

Oilers badly needed him, so they're fine with the 500k (or whatever it is) over pay. Usually takes more to get players to sign with the Oilers anyway, so it's pretty much expected.

I really like this signing. So far so good for solidifying the bottom 6.

That's a pretty good way of looking at it.

2.2M is what I value him at
2.5M is what I expected some team to lure Gordon with.
3M looks bad on paper but it adresses a need. What's 500k to a team that's not pushing the cap?

Canucks did a very similar contract with Manny who was offered 2.2M by San Jose and given 2.5M from Gillis. It seemed like an overpayment at the time but players who excel on the defensive side are usually underrated.

Gordon is a very good defensive player and can eat up major minutes (15-18) while giving the big 4 the easy offensive zone starts.

Worthwhile point. Then again, they felt they had to do it after giving up a first round pick for him. My X-Files vibe gets stronger and stronger when I'm trying to come to terms with the reality that Nashville signed both Nystrom and Hendricks for four years at inflated salaries. I always thought they were careful about how they spend money in that organization.

I guess it's the going rate for high-end shut down centers these days.

His advanced stats are pretty damn nice, I gotta say. Monster in the face off dot.

It's a bit rich but Oilers desperately need a center that's strong on faceoffs.

Of course there are bargains. You just have to find them.

He had 14 points in the lockout-shortened season? He's been on pace for 25 points the last few years, which is about 5 points less than your average 3rd-line center. I'd rather take the Selke-voted player with 5 fewer points, thank you.

He is not a 1-on-1 defender type that you put on someone. Most of the time the other team doesn't get the puck because he wins the faceoff. That's his value. And if they dare shoot it, he will find a way to block it. He's the ultimate 4th line center. PKs like a madman. Just keep him away from your 3rd line and you will be fine. He's an absolute black hole on offense. I haven't seen a player neuter a line regardless of his linemates that badly in a long, long time.

ouch I thought the oilers had a good young core, but these signings hurt their cap flexibility.

Hes a 4th line center making 3 millions.
He's much better than that, more a poor man's Malhotra (pre-injury). Not sure he's quite worth $3m but he's worth more than $1.5m.

Not on the first day there aren't. Deals can be found later, when players get more desperate.

This guy would have been gone by then.

Plus, we have lots of cap space. Finding a bargain is actually not all that important, except maybe to Katz.

The Edmonton fans aren't going to care about that extra million overpayment the first time he steps out on the PK.

I wouldn't worry about his contract. He is a gamer, through and through. EDM fans will love him. Outside of the ones that hate anything defensive.

Now suddenly he is a "Selke-voted player"?

Please... I`m actually laughing here! I know some of u have a hard time admitting when youre favorite team does a misstake or overpayment, but this? The "no-namer" suddenly becomes "selke-caliber" when Oilers overpay?

He got votes from 12 voters for the Selke, the "two way player" trophy. The only pure defensive forward that got more votes than him was Jay McClement, who probably got double the number of votes he should've with the Toronto media backing him. He also has ~50% Corsi with ~30% offensive zone starts. That's a high end defensive forward no matter how you cut it.
