The kid put up 21pts in 36 games 2 years ago and I remember him giving NJ fits. Good move to help org. depth at the very least.
With a potential lock out and the team in financial trouble, I'm not expecting anything big. Heck, I wasn't even expecting this. But the kid fits the PDB system and may surprise with some points. All good from here.
Tedenby - Josefson - Bernier
Carter - Gionta - Butler
we can roll 4 lines that are strong with the forecheck and can chip in a goal, I like alot
Hopefully Carter and Gionta are the muscle, because if you are expecting Butler to be strong on the forecheck... or the backcheck... or any kind of check, really, then I would hope that you re-evaluate your expectations on Butler before you are disappointed.
He's a sniper, pure and simple. He showed up to our camp last year in HORRIBLE shape, he just assumed he had a spot locked up on the team, and it hurt him the entire year. If he's not sniping, he's literally doing nothing out there. Nothing. His defence is, at best, below average.
Keep this in mind, Devils fans: we bought him out of ONE year of his contract, in which he was making just over $1mil. AND we are currently under the cap floor. And he signed a 2-way contract with you guys. Based on that evidfence alone, you have to realize you are getting a reclamation project. It might work out. Might not. It's certainly worth the chance, however. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
That all being said, I hope he works out for you. Nice to see him get a 2nd chance at the NHL, he's got the skill to be a "tweener"-type who can contribute a few goals on your bottom-6 if you can deal with his lack of defensive game. He's not a bad guy, but it was scary just how badly he blew the opportunity he made for himself here in Ottawa.
Don't know much about him, what can we realistically expect?
As others have said, he's not strong, good along the boards or good defensively. He's a pure offensive player. He's a pure goal scorer. He has some decent hands and can deke decent. His shot is probably above average. If he's on your third line you should probably expect 10-15 goals.
This is a good signing for the team, if it is true. They kid has shown that he can play in the bigs and can produce points in the AHL, because from where I stand the baby devils are going to need some people to score some goals./
