Don't like it? Stop going to games, that'll show him..
It's hilarious. Complain when Lou does something, complain when he doesn't do something. Overpaying for players you want and need happens EVERY year. It's like people just found out about that today.

One played for Florida, the other for SJ. Might have something to do with it. Though I understand your point.

Say it with me. Jerry. I'll slow it down for you while you're basking in the illogical Lou worship. OLDEST TEAM IN THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE. Very limited in terms of forward prospects on their way up.

they very well might not be the oldest team in the league anymore with Hedberg and Zids gone

I'm not sure if this team is the oldest team in the league anymore. The 80+ year old goaltending tandem is now about 68 years old and the goalies were skewing that number.

What younger players did you want? Horton? Weiss? Those guys aren't much younger than Clowe. Weiss is like a year younger than Clowe.

Say it with me slow... Stockpiling young D... New, young elite goaltender... Building from organizational strength... And acquiring forwards through trade and free agency.

Take away our ancient goalie tandem and our average age plummets to league norms.

Relax. Let's see what our team looks like when the games are played.

I don't know Lou just set our goaltender worries to rest. We don't have two 40 year olds in net anymore.

Our defense will be way younger in the next two seasons with the prospects coming up.

Also Elias and Zubrus are very old but they don't play like their age says so that really doesn't matter.

It would be worse if Lou stood complacent, it's better to get Clowe than nothing.

Maybe we shouldn't have signed the older players that we actually NEED like Elias and Zubrus?

This looks like it will turn into a Rolston type contract ending.

except this isn't a 35+ contract. So if Lou wants to get rid of him it wouldn't be that hard.

Possibly, but Clowe is much younger than Rolston was. Clowe is 30, Rolston was 35.

$5 million now is less than what it was in 08 when Rolston signed. Clowe is also 4 years younger than Rolston was, and the contract is not a 35+ either.

Steep price.

However, I'd rather Clowe for 5 years at 4.85, then Clarkson for 7 years at 5.25. Clowe is a better all-around player then Clarkson as well.

It's steep, but it's the price you have to pay to have a guy like that. I highly doubt Clowe continues at last years PPG or GPG pace. He will likely rebound.

In a "bad" year for Clowe he had as many assists in 40 games as Clarkson's career high of 16, which came in 80 games...

He has more points the past 5 seasons (235 points) than Clarkson has (144 points).

His 45 points in 2011-2012 placed him 1 point behind Clarkson's 46 points that year (career high for Clarkson)

Clowe has scored 50+ points 3 times in the past 5 seasons. Clarkson has never scored 50 points.

Clowe has much more nastiness, consistent physicality, and grit than Clarkson. Clowe is a tougher player, and a more intimidating player than Clarkson.

He makes more happen for his teammates than Clarkson.

...Now, is it an over payment? Sure. But such is free agency. It's about a million more per season, and a year longer than it should be. In free agency, that's not surprising at all. Zubrus got 3.5 per year under a salary cap that was about $20M less than it currently is. We had a need (especially after losing Clarkson) and we filled that need. Personally, when on his game and healthy, I like Clowe more than Clarkson. More of an all around player and a leader than Clarkson.

And their games are not at all similar. Rolston relied on speed and the slap shot. Clowe is a beast on the boards and a decent playmaker. That game ages better than Rolston's, I have to think.

That said, if the concussion problems continue, he won't be nearly as physical or good on the boards.

kinda interesting - Filppula just signed for 5 years 5m avg. look at his stats and Clowe's. Very similar. Perhaps a tad overpaid and too long terms for us, but seems to be the going rate.

Yeah. The danger with us is the injury history, but for better or worse we got Clowe for the going UFA rate.

I read through half this thread before writing off as one huge ***** and moan fest. I think that's more embarrassing than anything else.

Just ****ing be happy that Lou went out and signed someone to replace Clarkson, who is (ARGUABLY) better than him.
Only things Clarkson has on Clowe is youth, by a few years and a lack of health concerns. THAT'S IT. If Clowe stays healthy, which is more likely since he's had time to actually recover from his concussion issues, I would honestly rather have him than Clarkson.

Best of luck in TOR Clarkson.

Is anyone else interested to see if Clowe fits alongside Kovalchuk.

He's a lefty so he will probably be tested there, but he seems like he could contrast Kovalchuk's skills pretty well. I don't think he's much of a high possession player either, so that could fit with Kovalchuk who, admittedly not looking at the stats but assuming this based on the way he plays, is a pretty high possession player.

I don't think Clowe can keep up with Kovalchuk.

Well Palmieri did a good job of staying out of the way and planting himself in front of the net when Kovy went ape ****.

Something tells me he didn't get paid nearly 5 mil to be a bottom 6 role player.

They don't play the same type of game. He's more likely to end up on the second line with Elias, I think.

Or maybe on the third line with Zubrus and Matteau. That line would be impossible to handle with all that size.
