It's how we made it to the Finals last year, and that's how we'll have success in the future. He'll earn his paycheck by winning battles and finishing plays, not by going coast-to-coast. I don't care if Clowe has zero breakaways in the next five years, that's not what he's here for.
Precisely. Clowe was brought in for his board work and forechecking ability. We needed more guys willing to go into dirty areas and win pucks with their size. Clowe can do that. He's a big grinder with skill. Nobody is expecting him to be a burner.

There are two ways to create time and space in the offensive zone. One is speed on the rush, and the other is physical play on the cycle. Clowe is capable of making the power moves needed to get open. He will be great for his linemates, making space that they can use to tap their offensive creativity.

This is why the line of Parise-Zajac-Zubrus was so successful previously. Zubrus made space for his linemates, and talented guys like Parise and Zajac knew what to do with that space.

Good to know.
Let's reason this out fully. We know that Bernier and Carter are slow. The claim is that the fourth line was the most important for us during that playoff run, and that speed is the reason why they were important. Following this logic, we are left with the premise that Stephen Gionta was the most important player on that Cup Final team.

Make that two of us. Again, he went to UFA after making 4mil last season (cap hit was 3.6mil) and got a $850,000 raise per from last season, 1.25mil raise on his cap hit. Better passer, better hockey IQ than Clarkson. Medically, Lou says he's good, I trust him. His price is comparable to what Zubs made as a free agent when he first signed with NJ, and Clowe is arguably a better scorer/passer.

PFWDs are a premium so you got to spend a bit. Clarkson we knew, Horton will not play until December and has his own injury history. We got the cheapest of the three.

What's not to like?

So what was that about ownership and available resources again? yeah okay.

Is that true based on cap hit percentages? (the comparable to Zubs is what I mean)

By my calculations, the Zubrus contract was about 6.75% of the 07-08 cap.

Clowe's is about 7.5%

The difference as a percentage of cap hit is about the equivalent of 500K on today's cap.

6.8% in '07 versus 7.54% in '13. But I was going by market value.

But I couldn't hold the abacus, the pencil and the drink all at once so I took off my shoes.

Besides this past year's medical issues, I don't get the hate for the contract.

What a novel concept eh? I'm okay with it because it's free agency, at this point nothing surprises me.

If we get 3 years of a healthy Clowe doing what Clowe does when healthy, I'll be more than happy with this signing. I always wanted a Clarkson type if Clarkson eventually left, and Ryane Clowe is exactly the guy I wanted. For now I'm just happy to have him.

Clowe averaged 54 points in 76 games per season from 2008-09 to 2011-12, all while playing a physical game. If that's the player we get, he's well worth the contract. Obviously, injuries last season are a concern. It's nice that Lou is convinced the injuries are no longer an issue, but he was convinced of that when he brought Mogilny back, so we'll see.

I've watched Clowe play so much over the years on Center Ice. The Sharks were always the team I watched late at night. This guy is a player and we will not regret this signing i guarantee it. This guy can play and I expect 20 goals and 50 points year in and year out.

Well if it's any consolation, I thought the Zubrus deal was perfectly fine when it was signed and was really happy in the versatility he provided us these last 6 years.

if Clowe fully recovers from his injuries, I agree with you. His injuries are the gamble here.

For sure, if we are getting injury prone Clowe this is going to suck. If he is healthy and regains form this will be a good deal.

Whats the gamble. We can just Pronger him if he has concussion issues. The only issues are if he gets minor injuries but still plays, which hurts his production

The concussion risk can result in a less physical brand of game from him than we would normally be accustomed to. And this whole decrease in "foot speed" thing and how he's "slowed down" compared to the pace of the game is making me worry.

We don't really score off the rush much anyways. I'm definitely worried about people saying he is really slow, but we mostly score off the cycle. It won't be as big of an issue down low like that, look at how Clarkson could excel doing that, or how well CBGB does.
