If you think Clowe's deal sucks I'll give you some perspective. We will likely have Volchenkov for at least four years at roughly 600K less a year than Clowe. His defense at even strength has been far below average and he brings minimal offense. Clowe will bring some offense and I think will be more than serviceable for at least four years if he remains healthy.

Thankfully he'll be wearing a more ATTRACTIVE Jersey now.

I'm happy with signing him, but I just don't understand why we are paying nearly $5mil for a guy that in DeBoers style will play 3rd line. I see that as top 6 money. Maybe Lou has another trade upcoming where we trade a center so Henrique doesn't move to the wing.

Elias - Loktionov - Kovy
Clowe - Zajac/Henrique - Ryder
Zubrus -Josefson - (Henrique?)
Carter - Gionta - Bernier

We have 4 centers, 3 of them are top 6. Someone needs to be moved because there is no way Josefson is going to 4th line or Albany anymore. He's ready and needs consistent minutes.

Henrique will move to wing and Josefson will play 3rd line center.

We definitely need more of that. We don't really have anybody who is good at tipping pucks on the PP anymore. Clowe can give us that. I think both he and Ryder will do well on our PP.

Stolen from Sharks board.

Edit:

Looking at Clowes line mates over the past 3 years. He has always played with skilled players, ALWAYS.

He has always played with mainly Couture or otherwise Pavelski, usually with another skilled winger with them like Havlat or Marleau. A.K.A top 2 lines.

If we expect him to go back to scoring 20ish goals we can't expect him to magically produce with the likes of Zubrus or especially Josefson.

Clowe - Loktionov - Kovalchuk
Elias - Zajac - Ryder
Zubrus - Henrique - Olesz/Tedenby
Carter - Gionta - Bernier

Switch Henrique and Loktionov if Loktionov struggles.

Clowe has also been in the top 5 in ES TOI/gm for the sharks over the past 3 years. He has actually averaged more ES ice time than basically all our forwards over the past 3 years apart from Kovalchuk and Parise and Zajac, once.

Here are the posts from earlier this year:

Don't be surprised if Lou goes really hard after Ryane Clowe. He's liked him for a long time from what I hear and has apparently set his eyes on him this year. Don't know if something will happen, but that's one guy Lou wants really badly.

If we somehow end up with Ryane Clowe after the deadline, you know where you heard it first. I posted about it months ago. Lou has been a huge fan for a long time, and has wanted to acquire him several times over the years.

Yea and it wasn't goals that went off his butt, ear, nose, or hands by accident

On another note, looking at his history of games played one would not know he had injury issues if no one said anything about it? When was it? This past season? For the past 4 seasons (not including this past one) he's played over 70 games, which for me is fine. Anyone is susceptible to getting injured for a short period.

If he were in Palmieri's slot and we had one of our injured centers back this team would look a lot different.

Okay, I guess SOME of this board's members would make decent GMs...

Were people this mad when we signed both Volchenkov and Tallinder in 2010? One of them for $600k less than Clowe and for one more year, and Tallinder to a so so contract? Especially with a lower cap ceiling, and having trouble to get under the ceiling. I never liked either of those deals, but would have been okay with one of them.

I'll take a forward who puts up points over a stay at home defenseman with close to the same terms. I'd do it every time.

I remember being tentatively excited. Thought the term was going to be an issue with Volchenkov, but I was excited about the hitting ability.

The biggest issue with signing Tallinder and Volchenkov that year was that our defense badly needed mobility, speed and creativity from the back end. I'm assuming Lou tried to get a true offensive d-man, but once he failed, he just plugged in UFAs he figured would be reliable, if not puck-movers.

The Ryder contract is a slam-dunk. With Clowe, if his brains get fried, he's on LTIR. If he's slow and useless but healthy, well, maybe one day the Islanders will need to reach the cap floor again.

If Clowe can be the player we saw in San Jose minus the 2012-13 season... I'm loving this deal.

The scary part is that we might, MIGHT, be stuck with the player we saw last year in SJ and if that's the case, he and Volchenkov will be ****ing our cap for years and years.

Coming off a BRUUUUUUUUUUTAL year stats wise and landing 2 (maybe 3) concussions in a 48 game calendar while handing out a 5 year deal worth just a little south of 5M$ per is taking a massive, massive risk.

Let's just hope it won't turn out like another deal that has me losing my mind for the past couple of years.

If it does, then the risk didn't pay off. That's all. Then we have to deal with it. But that's the nature of taking risks, and it's the nature of the UFA market. So don't go pulling all your hair out.

I get that there's a risk in each signing but you have to look towards the future as well and if two players are eating just under 10M$ of cap space and are underperforming like crazy, that can put the team in a real crappy position in the years to come.

It's a pretty big risk if you ask me, unless we can part ways with #28 next summer.
