They probably could have had him quite a bit cheaper. I'd say he deserves more than minimum, but not this high.

Don't waste your time asking the sheep to make sense of their feaster bashing.

They're like the one kid that hangs around the "cool" kids in school mimicking them in hopes of being accepted at some point. Pathetic

1 year deal to see if his game gets better, I'm not a butler fan, but there is nothing wrong with this signing with calgarys cap space. Has a good year then he gets re-signed or flipped at the deadline for a late pick, or he stays par and doesn't get re-signed.

Haters gonna hate but its a nothing to lose signing.

It's just filling up the lineup sheet.

One year deal, flames have tons of space, not a problem at all.

It's a fine signing. Anything under 2mil I don't have a problem with. People here just want to hate the Flames.

This deal is likely to have long term consequences for the Flames. If they'd gotten a similar defenceman for 1.4 mil, the Flames would be cup contenders.

On a multiyear deal sure, but on a 1 year deal I think the amount is fine. If its an overpayment it isn't by much.

Let me rephrase that.

The Flames re-signed a player who is barely an adequate NHLer for just under 2 million dollars. One year deal, fine, but it just fills space in the lineup (and you know what you're getting with him, and that's not much); could have been utilized by a better defenseman from the free agent market.

Butler isn't anything special. He's, however, a competent bottom pairing d-man, that can fill a hole in the top 4, if injuries occur. He's also young and has room to grow.

There are enough holes in the Flames defence that all the young players will get a chance to play. If someone really looks ready at camp, a la TJ Brodie, they can always send Buttler to the minors. The team can easily afford it.

Also, the Flames probably overpaid for a 1 year, as oppossed to multi-year deal. This will allow Butler to be traded at the deadline potentially.

Butler is getting unfairly trashed.

He isn't a top-4 guy, but hes not a #7 either. Butler is a very steady #5 Dman, and he holds his own quite well on the bottom pairing.

He gets unfairly treated like the plague because of two things:

A) His huge -7 game against Boston, where the entire team imploded

and more importantly,

B) He was being used on the top pairing with Bouwmeester in 11/12 and looked awful (because he isn't a top 4 D).

The combination has led people to think he can't play at all. Hes not a great D, but he is NHL material.

Flames have a butt load of cap space. Need bodies.

Short term. Low risk.

Hate Calgary but this isn't a bad signing.
