If we are careful, we can probably get by w/Talbot.
His glove hand seems fast enough, IMO.
Rest of his game needs work, but if he plays mostly vs. weaker teams, gets dedicated training up here, stays sharp doing most of the practice load, we might be able to go there. And save 1.3 vs. the minimum to start.

Biron will play over 20 games this season. The value he provides to keep Lundqvist fresher for the playoffs is well worth $1.3m.

Whatever it is, even if its just for space. I'm not worried about offer sheets, but we need some flexibility.

Pronger is a 35+ contract. He hits their cap the same on LTIR.

Someone else can do the job cheaper. Carolina signed Khuodobin for 800k.

Capspace for 2013/2014 (19 players signed) - $11,855,833

There is not enough $$ left for resigning all the RFAs come the start of the season

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Richards-Brassard-Callahan
Boyle-Moore-Zuccarello
Pyatt-Lindberg/Powe-Asham/Haley

That does not include Hags, but playing Boyle on the wing with Moore and Zucc gives us a 3rd line that can put up some points and I just saw we signed Pouliot which changes things!
Zuccarello makes some sense with Boyle--Mats is more the playmaker than the goal scorer unless it's shootout time. He has the creativity thing that Boyle lacks and Boyle's size, wingspan and defensive acumen helps to cover some of Zucc's weaknesses.

Personally I think Pyatt is a waste. Big guy--not much presence or scoring and a bottom liner who isn't tough and doesn't kill penalties. I like Asham and I think he serves a purpose but his skating isn't all there. He's basically just on a straight line--does not cover enough ice. Powe--you don't score at all?--WTF! No goals--no assists. I get that he's a decent pk'er and not a bad forechecker but even Jed Ortmeyer used to score once in a while.

He's a fine goalie, the difference becomes minimal in a small sample that he would play - 20 games max (plus highly increased variance due to small sample) - and the extra 500k savings could be used for a player who can impact the team in a more meaningful matter.

Things completely change when the summer ends. Players will get put on LTIR, buried, two-way contracts hit for their full cap, etc. Once the three forwards get signed, the Rangers will have 15 forwards on their roster. 2 will get buried or traded for at least $1.8m in extra cap space. Or they won't, because Cally and Hagelin will be on LTIR.

2014 Draft picks
  • 1st round NYR
  • 2nd round NYR
  • 3rd round NYR
  • 4th round NYR
  • 5th round Florida (for Casey Wellman)
  • 6th round NYR
  • 7th round NYR*
  • NO 5th rounder NYR traded to San Jose for Ryan Clowe in 2013 - conditions being if he does not resign with NYR - then San Jose gets the 5th pick.
  • Eventually NO 7th rounder (conditionally traded to San Jose along with Tommy "horror-movie" Grant for Brandon Mashinter 2013 - condition being if he resigns with NYR then San Jose gets the pick). B. Mashinter has now been qualified - likely meaning this pick is going to San José
Great job as usual with the helpful tables.
Think I remember someone saying Niemi, Jyri is buh-bye.

The dust is still clearing. By mid next week we can see who are our best trading partners for who we are willing to move, the usual suspects, MDZ/Boyle.

I see WinJets as possible as to Burmi to us. Hoping there is a middle ground we can both live with.

Chicago has too many options not to do a deal w/us either.
That requires a fresh look.

LA has assets for us; do we have D for them, now that Scuderi is buh bye?
That should be some kind of match, but not sure.

The unlikely but possible scenario is a surprise by a team like Buffalo if they make massive overpayment offer for favorite son Callahan (a no, unless it is, as I said, massive enough).

If Vigneault is the kind of coach that just runs with the starter no matter what then it makes some sense to look for a cheaper backup or bring up your best AHL goalie. If there are 20 some starts for the backup then keeping Biron makes the most sense. There is the variable of how the team is doing. Last year Biron hardly played because the Rangers needed to scrap for every point they could get. A coach's goaltending decisions can hinge on that.

I believe the shortened season played a bigger role in how little playing time Biron got than anything else. No goalie has one the Cup in years when playing more than 62 games in the regular season. Most people believe that this isn't coincidence. This year, there was no worry about that.

Yes, Niemi signed in Finland and then we didn't qualify him. He's gone.

I saw it with the beat writers regarding Niemi being a goner. But he stills remains an RFA on cap geek... Time will tell

I like what Sather's done so far; we have some security in case the youngin's don't do as well as we're hoping, all only 1 year, and cheap.

All contracts hit the same on LTIR. 35+ has nothing to do with it.

The difference is if he were to retire. They would still be hit with the cap hit, but would be unable to replace him via LTIR.

personal bias in me doesn't want to see MDZ go. All this cap issue and need for trade to open up some space is nerve racking for me I didn't mind keeping Pyatt but now, trade that ****er for future considerations!
