Very similar to the Ramo contract. Good move. Has looked very good when he's played ,but has yet to play a full season as a starter or as a pasrt of a platoon, and with Ramo, he has looked great in the KHL the last three years, but needs to prove he can transition to the NHL game.

Two talented goalies both get about 2.8 per year for two years, that's about where the market for a player like this is atm

I can't complain about it either way, I was never debating why Reimer is making such little amount for a starter. The optics of the deal just appear that Bernier will be the starter because he is being paid almost $3 million bucks and again that's a lot for a back-up so obviously he is being touted as the next starter with that type of money being thrown around.
Not too sure if this is an inside joke I'm missing or something, but once you win the Norris I think it's safe to say your a #1 D, AT LEAST for the following year.

As for Bernier, I think he should of received around the same $ James did with his "prove-yourself-contract". But I'm still happy he's an RFA after this deal expires.

Look at the RFA compensation sheet and you'll see why he's at 2.9.

I know the RFA compensation sheet, that doesn't tell me why he gets 2.9mil, 1.1mil more than Reimer.

Nonis doesnt have a clue what he's doing. Bernier literally has no grounds to command that much given what he's done so far in his career.

That 1M overpayment is going to be 1M less we have to work with re-signing Kessel/Phaneuf/Gardiner/Reimer/Kulemin/Bolland/McClement next year.

Thought he'd be making closer to Holtby then 3 million, but I guess he holds the cards. Still a good deal.

A fair bit more than I thought he'd get.

Hope he does well here in Toronto.

i dont understand the hate on this deal. you just signed a great goalie who WILL be your starting goalie starting november on a great contract. Some of you must not watch many western conference games, shocker eh. Congrats on the good goalie tandem, now you have 10 million to sign kadri and round out your roster, in a better spot than most the league

All I hear is *****ing from leaf fans. That's a good bridge contract for a great player. You guys got the next god damn patrick roy. Quit complaining. He'll ask for 5+ on his next contract...

What's the over/under on how many games until Bernier is the full time starter? 41?

The overpayment was presumably so Bernier would retain his RFA status upon the contract's expiration. Spend a little now, save a little later.

The cap is likely going up next year, the Leafs have two buyouts coming off the books and plenty of time to make trades. I wouldn't worry about re-signing those guys just yet.

That's not exactly true. Bernier could have signed an offer sheet with another team for up to $3.3 million AAV and Toronto would have to match or lose him for a 2nd. That threat could have served as leverage in negotiations, as the Leafs wouldn't want to lose him for less than they paid for him two weeks ago.

Lol this is the one situation where, almost without fail, I've seen a team trade a player to Toronto where the previous teams fans still sing his praises after he's become a Leaf. Surprising and nice to see, makes me feel very comfortable with the player.

After seeing how things have turned out, Frattin would be a valued player on the Leafs currently, but if Bernier comes within the vicinity of what LA fans think he can become, I will be happy.

Reimer signed his Contract before he had the value he does. Some people can't get over Bernier making more than Reimer, and I find it mind boggling that they don't understand the idea that Reimer is signed so cheaply because he signed that deal before he had consistent success.

Decent deal. Two years to secure the no. 1 spot for good and be in line for a bigger payday. Thought they were talking about a longer deal though? At least that's what the rumors were saying.
