Bernier has done nothing to prove being worth 3 mil. He now makes more than Reimer. Apparently Nonis doesn't know what leverage is.

kind of like Clarkson making as much as lupul and Kessel.. this is not going to help in future negotiations.

I have a feeling Bernier is going to make this contract look like an absolute bargain.

Sucks for Reimer though, really like the guy.

Some of you need to get it into your heads that Reimer and Bernier's contracts were signed under different circumstances. Reimer was a 3rd string goalie that was called up due to circumstances and got a contract after 37 games played in the NHL and he came with far less fan fare and upside. Also, if a team gave Bernier an offer sheet, the Leafs could have lost him for a 2nd round pick after having to spend a 2nd round pick + Frattin and Scrivens just to get him.

And lastly, there is no rule that says that two goalies sharing the net must be paid the same amount of money. The Leafs have a tandem of two potential #1s and they're paying a combined 4.7M for them. Even if just one solidifies themselves as a starter, the other will easily be an above average back-up goalie. That's a lot of security in the net for just 4.7M when a lot of teams around the league are paying 5+ for just their starter.

Edit: And you know how I know this is a great deal? Because everyone except for Leafs fans love it!

In a few months they'll see the true value of Bernier and realise he's a significant upgrade on Reimer.
First, Great location.

Second I think you are spot on.

It's just a matter of time before JB establishes himself (a short amount of time imo) as the Leafs #1 and then you will have a solid back up in Riemer and in the end have a valuable trading piece too. To me this was a great deal for the Leafs but I have spent years watching JB develop and play. In time I think that most Leaf fans will see how great this kid is.

Nice pay too.

That's true, but do you have a playoff hero's potential goalkeeper? I think you do with Bernier, although I have not seen a lot of his play lately, since he played for LA (west coast).

Actually, even Reimer in the right circonstance could be huge for you.

In the NNE so far (New-Northeast), In my opinion, the top duo of goaltenders

Ottawa:
Anderson, Lehner (4.1 M$ for two) ** Best duo in the East I think }
Boston:
Rask, Johnson (7.6 M$ for two) ** Rask has brought his team to the SC final. He's the man so far }
Detroit:
Howard, Gustavsson (6.8 M$ for two) ** Howard has proved more lately than Price }
Buffalo:
Miller, Enroth (7.5 M$ for two) ** Miller should be great once the team settles in }
Montreal:
Price, Budaj (7.9 M$ for two) ** Price has done great so far in his career, with tough pressure }
Toronto:
Bernier, Reimer (4.7 M$ for two) ** Great potential, but great risk also }
Florida:
Markstrom, Clemmensen (1.2 M$ for one, Markstrom RFA) ** Markstrom should be there soon }
Tampa Bay:
Bishop, Lindback (4.1 M$ for two) ** Really tough to say right now, could suprise }

True but Luongo is a proven #1.

Speaking of Luongo, Renaud Lavoie tweeted earlier today that Roberto may not even return to the Canucks.

I'm quite happy that our goaltending situation isn't a gong show like Vancouver's.

No need to feel bad for him. The leafs have no axe to grind.

If a year from now, the leafs have decided on Bernier being the future of the leafs, theyll move reimer so he can be a starter on another team.

Pretty much exactly what was expected. Shortterm deal for Bernier to try and prove himself. Money reflects his play from his limited sample size and the "potential" for him when taking on a larger load.
