Why does there need to be a draft this year?

I apologize if this has been dealt with already, but why is the NHL so intent upon having a draft this year?

The way I see it, very fairest way to settle draft position is to wait a whole season. That is the only way to get a true draft order. And for teams like the Flyers, it would seem better, since there would be greater depth.

Has the NHL gave reasons for feeling they HAVE to have a draft this year, or is the Sidney Crosby Hype too much for them to wait a year for?

Each year maybe three players from the previous year's draft actually make their teams, with few having an impact, so other than the Crosby situation, what is the motivation for forcing a draft now?

And avoiding having his agents sue the NHL to become an UFA.
Imagine the chaos of 30 times trying to sign this years prospects as UFAs.

crosby has gotten big offers to play in europe, the NHL can not afford to lose a big talent... they need all the offensive help they can get

So it is basically the NHL doesn't want to lose Crosby to somewhere else then. That stinks, although at least no team can throw the season. As long as the Devils don't get him, I won't be too mad, although the thought of an already contending team like Ottawa getting him doesn't sit too well with me either.

Crosby suing the NHL or playig elsewhere is not an issue, IMO.

What happens to clubs that traded draft picks in the cancelled draft? Seems unfair to both sides of such a trade. You either lose the pick you traded for, or the team that traded the pick in a weak draft to miss out on the big double whammy mega draft with two years worth of talent.

If they are going to have a next season, they need to have a draft before, to resolve the Crosby issue as he will be a key in the league's revitalized marketing next year.
