Interesting. Though there was an unwritten rule/code that once a team had approached a player others were expected to back-off, along with some arcane geographical or territorial rights, if the player in question was potentially a Superstar those rules would be tossed.

Leafs used their St. Mike's connection.

This was contentious since St. Mike's depending on the situation were not bound by hockey or CAHA protocol. Old hockey or education issue.

Ya, Smythe & the Leafs played the St.Mikes card quite a bit, one of the schools Priests actually doing the "recruiting", having a chat with the family, "doing whats best for the lad" type dealeo. Rather ironic really, as when Smythe himself was a boy growing up in Toronto, he had to run the Gauntlet on his way to & from school of Irish Catholic & Protestant kids, as he was really neither, his father an atheist, wee Conn there rather frail as it was getting the tar beaten out of himself before learning how to fight back & box.
