This just in: Longtime DRW scouts Joe MacDonnell (head amateur) & Mark Leach (east area) have jumped to Dallas in Jim Nill's wake.

Here we go..

More on MacD/Leach: Strikes me as peculiar b/c I'd have thought there'd be non-compete component from DRW on Nill's release from contract.

MacDonnell is highly respected. Interesting that he's going off to Dallas now.

More on MacD/Leach: Have to presume that Hakan Andersson will be a target for Jim Nill at some pt. HA has close work relationship with McD

Joe MacDonnell was one guy you saw everywhere. Big loss for the Red Wings, interested to see who gets promoted/hired.

Wow. On one hand, it's probably a really good opportunity for somebody within the organization. Maybe Hakan?

On the other hand, that's just crazy.

Why do the wings allow this? Don't these guys have contract?

Just great. MacDonnell probably wanted a raise. Ken Holland didn't like his pace. Daniel needed his money and 3 years.

I'm getting ticked off with how our organization is getting picked apart this easily.

So starting next season our drafting will start to suck? Mark Leach was the OHL scout? hmm the wings haven't had that much success there I believe... But McDonnel... head amateur.. I think he's pretty darn good and is a big loss

It's the same thing that happened with Nill. He had a contract, but they weren't going to hold him back if he wanted to go somewhere else.

I'm just working on a thread about where the Wings have picked, when and how they have performed, from 05-13.

Ken Holland PM me, I'll replace whoever you need to. I think a year of learning the ropes I'd be top notch.

BUT, we can think of it this way: what if the Wings have guys they think can move into that spot AND they're not particularly thrilled with how the draft turned out? This wouldn't be so bad to them.

i lost faith in mcdonnell when he called andré burakovsky a russian player because his dad was russian. problem was unless malmö is russia, robert wasn't russian either.

so yeah, i think i'm happy he's gone.

There may be some significant changes coming in the #RedWings scouting staff as well. Stay tuned.

Really surprised we're not talking about this more. Seems like it could be a big deal, especially with how unhappy people are with the draft. Maybe Kenny/Jimmy D are just as unhappy?

I'd be shocked to see McDonnell out already, though.

Same here Ken. I've got 4 years of coaching experience & I've done some evaluation in the past for teams. Give me a year to get used to it & you won't regret it.

It sucks losing MacDonnell more so than Leach, though if Leach was the one who was pushing for Ouellet/Sproul/Jurco/etc. than we could be in for a bit of rough adjustment year.

Do we only have 1 scout for the OHL, or is there 2 or 3 guys?

If we lose Hakan we may well never see another European gem, does Hakan have a protege yet?

They passed MacDonnell over for Martin so this isn't really shocking.

how serious are the Hakan rumors in that first post?

I believe we are starting to see the emperor has no clothes.

The prudent thing would have been to bump Holland up to before dementia allowed him run this thing into the ground.

Nill or Yzerman would have been preferable imo starting the year Yzerman got the Tampa job.

The Detroit Red Wings director of amateur scouting is following former assistant general manager Jim Nill to Texas, G.M. Ken Holland told MLive.com today.

Nill, the Red Wings former assistant general manager who was hired to be the Dallas Stars G.M. in April, has lured Joe McDonnell away from the Red Wings.

McDonnell has been a Red Wings scout for 18 years and became their director of amateur scouting in 2003.

Nill also hired Red Wings scout Mark Leach to accompany McDonnell to Dallas.

Holland said the Red Wings hope to have their scouting staff in place by next week. They're going to make a few additions and will give more prominent roles to scouts Jeff Finley and David Kolb.

It's interesting to see that when it came to Holland vs Nill, most of Detroit's staff sides with Nill.

But at the same time, we shouldn't get so panicky. I know it hasn't happened to us lately, but this is pretty much how the hockey business works.

Honestly, I would too.

Even back when Nill to Dallas came official.
