Can't give him an offer sheet, he is in arbitration.

Oh...then, since Toronto doesn't want to pay the kid, Habs should offer a 2nd & Moen to TO to see how much they want to keep him...

I would much rather use the trade route than to offer sheet a player anyways, but I don't know if they would trade with us.

We've traded with the Leafs before (remember Grabovski), if the price is right...

I agree with this, killer skill set, but only time will tell

That was a pretty minor deal, though. At that point Grabovsky had not played much in the NHL.

Since then, they have gotten a lot of flack for their deals with Boston.

Would you offer sheet Tanev $3,364,391+? (1st+3rd rounder range)

$1,110,249 or below - No Compensation
Over $1,110,249 to $1,682,194 - 3rd round pick
Over $1,682,194 to $3,364,391 - 2nd round pick
Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 - 1st round pick, 3rd
Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781 - 1st round pick, 2nd, 3rd
Over $6,728,781 To $8,410,976 - Two 1st Round Picks, 2nd, 3rd
Over $8,410,976 - Four 1st Round Picks

Basically something in the 3.5M-4M range.
I think Vancouver matchs anything under $3,364,391 but the likeliness of them matching a 3.5M+ contract while getting a 1st and 3rd as compensation is much less.

Now i know thats alot of money for an unproven player but part of making a great team requires taking some risks. Signing Tanev would solidify our top 4 core for the next 5-10 years(if he pans out as expected of course), seeing as hes a defensively responsible RHD. He would be a perfect partner for Beaulieu.

Tinordi/Subban
Beaulieu/Tanev
Emelin/

i would personally offer him 3.75M for 3-4 years, thoughts?

Would try for a Franson trade with the Leafs before I offered anything for Tanev...

Nah. Vancouver would match and I'd rather got after Mark Stuart, or someone else with a first.

I disagree; as the Leafs want to keep money for others, I can see them trading Franson for whatever they can get if he gets a substantial raise from the arbitrator...and Franson is far more a physical guy than Tanev, another plus...

We don't have the cap space to offersheet anything for Pietrangelo that St. Louis won't match...

pietrangelo has more offencive upside but we would have to tie up too much $$ into our d-core.

all a team really needs is 2 solid PMD's (beaulieu + subban) and 4 defensively solid d-men's (the top 4 should have a better overall game and the 5-6 pair should be more physical/stay at home type players). i personally think thats the most optimal way to manage your d-core ressources, assuming u want to have some $$ left for your forwards

No, if we are going after a young player for D, then I would prefer to sign Colten Teubert for cheap.

He brings a physical presence and would be a good depth signing once Emelin comes back.

No, it's risky enough signing him in the high range of 2nd round pick compensation. You may end up with an average defenceman making 3.3 million. I'd like to see a team like Calgary try it to screw over the Canucks though.

Normally I would say don't offer sheet, just ends up biting you in the ass. But since we're talking about the Cannucks here, I'm willing to listen

I know some teams do it, but a lot of GMs stay away from doing it, and I think it's best not to give a GM somewhere a reason to revenge offersheet you in the future.
