I just don't see a playoff team in this, if so they are a wildcard

There is still hope Kostka signs. Or did someone else snatch him up?

I think the goaltending is slightly improved. Should be worth a couple of wins. I am not on the Bolland bandwagon yet because he actually had kind of a crappy year but I think they can expect he will at least be no worse than Grabs in that role. Clarkson will outscore the MacArthur of the last couple of seasons and he has the toughness which the top 6 lacked, so that might be worth a game or two. They won't have 57 games of Holzer and Kostka, and that has to be worth two or three wins. That's maybe five wins, 10 points, and an easy playoff club. Frattin's hot start may have contributed to a couple of wins, but that still leaves them 6 points up on this season and tied for 1st in the Division.

I liked Scrivens but he is not as good as Bernier. I liked Grabovski, but not for what he was able to contribute last season, and to a lesser extent MacArthur for the same reasons. The only real loss to me was Frattin for what he might do in the next couple of years. I think Kadri and JVR could improve a little bit this season, and Gardiner too. It won't look as sketchy once they get their defense in some kind of order and we see if Dion can thrive with one of the current guys, and whether we get playoff Gardiner or regular season Gardiner.

i guess we will see...

I think they have a solid top 9, tough 4th line and good goaltending.

My questions are on D

I think the tj signing is because fraser is gone, I mean hes not going to be able to play that fighting style of game anymore because he was dumb in the first place to not wear a visor, and hes not worth more than a million. With the little amount of cap left we need to save ever dollar possible for kadri/gunnarson/franson

Yeah agreed. Thing about our D is that we have to be patient. If the Leafs are to become a contender it will be through or d depth from our drafting. Our d is extremely young but all the pieces are already there.

With what we've got now, this would be my line-up:

Forwards:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson
Colborne-Bolland-Kulemin
D'amigo-McClement-Orr
McLaren

Defense:

Phaneuf-Gunnarson
Gardiner-Franson
Liles-Fraser
Brennan/Holzer/Rielly

Goalies:

Bernier/Reimer

Rielly wont make it next year, he needs to work on developing the defensive side of his game and Carlyle won't play a liability like him if he refused to play Gardiner

JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Kulemin/Clarkson
D'Amigo/Leivo - Bolland - Kulemin/Clarkson
McLaren - McClement - Orr
Colborne

Phaneuf - Gunnarsson
Gardiner - Franson
Liles (sigh) - Fraser
Brennan

The worst part about this lineup is that Rielly could be doing what Liles will bring and more, but our coach will be stubborn and you know the rest.. Wouldn't surprise me if Gardiner spends the first week of the season in the press box in favor of Brennan or Holzer.

I envision a Lupul -- Kadri -- Clarkson line to be very impactful next year.

If Lupul can just stay healthy of course. I believe that with the right wingers Kadri might potentially release his "inner Tucker" and be an abrasive 100+pim player who is more impactful than just his points. With these two linemates it gives him an excellent chance at not falling into a slump after his breakout season. They need to be injury free for the first 40 games to get rolling.

Rielly and Gardiner together? Please no. And JML and Brennan, are we allowed to bring Bernier and Reimer in when they come on the ice? In all seriousness though this lineup proposed has like 5 PMD, there's a very desperate need there for Fraser or even Franson IMO.

From what I heard the Brennan signing basically means no more Kostka, which is probably a good thing. He came out early in the seasons looking amazing but he really faded fast. I feel like Fraser, Holzer, these are better options by far.

Rielly is a thoroughbred.

He'll be able to play any style of game.

I don't want Kadri to be fighting regularly in the NHL, so I definitely don't want to see him get 100 + pims. That's over 50 minor penalties in a single season, not what you want from any player.

I do think Kadri could develop a bit more of an edge though, and I love the idea of a Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson line.

JVR - Bozak - Kessel <-- scoring line #1
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson <-- scoring line #2
McClement - Bolland - Kulemin <-- shutdown line
McLaren - Colborne - Orr <-- tough guys

Phaneuf - Gardiner
Franson - Gunnarsson
Rielly - Fraser/Holzer
Liles

Bernier - Reimer

This is how I see Carlyle using his forward lines. He won't break up the Kessel line that had good chemistry last year, and Clarkson should be a great compliment to Kadri and Lupul. He also likes to have his shutdown line and those are his three best shutdown forwards by a long shot. On the fourth line you could see a Marlie instead of one of McLaren or Orr, but they were both in the lineup enough times last year I don't think Carlyle is afraid of doing it. And for their limited ice time and being fighters both McLaren and Orr aren't horrible offensively.

On the back end this is probably more how I'd like to see things pan out, but not sure what Carlyle would do. I think if Kostka looked as good as he did at times playing with Phaneuf then someone with as much skill as Gardiner should be a great match, and he's underrated in his own end. Franson and Gunnar is a solid pairing, and on the bottom it would be nice to see Rielly play himself into a spot where he could play sheltered minutes with a stay-at-home type and get in some PP time with Franson. Ideally JML is moved before the regular season, but I could also see Carlyle starting Rielly in the AHL and JML in his place on the third pairing.

Goaltending is obviously a crap shoot at this point, they'll probably just go with the hot hand at the time.

I really hope Rielly gets the chance to stick with the Leafs this year, but I wouldn't want to see him paired with Gardiner. Stick Gardiner with Phaneuf and Gunnarsson with Rielly and I'd like it, and I don't think Carlyle would feel too comfortable putting those two young guys together for that many minutes, and that's if he's even comfortable having them both in his top six period right now.

McClemment played amazing as 3rd line winger when needed and I would love to see him play a 3rd line checking winger role with Bolland and Kulemin (if we cannot fill that spot internally with a prospect) and promote Colborne to center the 4th line between McLaren and Orr!

JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Clarkson
D'Amigo/Ashton - Bolland - Kulemin
McLaren - McClement - Orr
Colborne

Phanuef - Gunnarson
Gardiner - Franson
Liles - Fraser
Brennan

- Can see Liles getting traded
- One of Ashton/D'Amigo will crack the bottom 6
- Granberg is a dark horse for that 6th/7th D spot

Almost every lineup has McClement in the top 9 and Likes on the bottom pairing, which means the Leafs are currently one injury away from icing 4th liners or random Marlies in the top 9 forwards or the bottom pair. That should be scary.

It's easy to argue how this team should be better than last year based on single player replacements, but the third line looks ready to get killed on possession and the scoring depth is all but gone. Better hope Nonis has some great ideas for the rest of the off season.

Still not sure if it's better to go:
Lupul - Kadri - Kessel
JVR - Bozak - Clarkson

or

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Kadri - Clarkson

On the one hand with the first option you have the top 2 C's where they could grow/be in a role that's fitting of their skill level while in the 2nd option you'd have more scoring spread out throughout the line-up.
