Not that I'm saying the Habs will, nor do i want them too. Personally I think they will push for 8th in the East, most likely falling short.
But lets just say we finish last in the NHL this year.....hold on to the top pick through the lottery. And take Alexander Ovechkin.
The NHL then goes on strike and signs a deal right before the 2005 Entry Draft.
What does the league do with all of the 2005 draft eligbles....just run with the same draft order....hence the Habs would pick first overall in 2005 and get Crosby!
Just curious if this is even a remote possiblity.
What will they do with the 2005 draft class.
Move to 2006??
Use 2004 draft order??
Have a league wide lottery...which in my mind is a bad idea as a team like the Avs or Wings could win and draft Crosby.
Let`s say we finish last and draft the next Mario Lemieux. He'll learn how to play in NHL with the habs and just when he'll get a huge contract he'll be traded to a better team...
The habs have become the NHL rookies training team.

You have just convinced me that you know NOTHING about the Canadiens. There has NEVER been an instance where the Habs have traded a player because they could not afford him. They may have traded players because they made too much relative to their performance (i.e. Linden and the possible departure of the much maligned Brisebois), but if he is a stud and performs like one there is ZERO chance that he is moved BECAUSE WE CANNOT AFFORD HIM (there may be other reasons. See Chelios and Turgeon). Montreal is in the top 3rd in payroll in the league. If only they could spend that money properly... I don't know where you got this farm system to the rest of the league crap from... Maybe thinking of the Expos?

Amen, and at the end of this season, we'll be relieved of a lot of contracts. Combine that with the new CBA, and I'm guessing we will see a very different team next season (when ever THAT is... )

My best guess (and something I've seen aroun these boards) is that they will most likely combine both the 2005 and 2006 draft. By using the same draft as in 2004, the teams having the best picks will find themselves with a HUGE advantage. Too big in my opinion, and I'm pretty sure this wouldn't go well with the GMs, Owners and Prez around the league. As to having a league wide lottery, you exposed yourself the biggest problem with that solution.
The next few years will have some interesting issues both on the off the ice.

Maybe they will do the lottery with the same rank as 2004 (but not necessary in the same order)
Are you saying the Habs didn't trade Recchi to save money? Weinrich? Damphousse?
Exactly what I was about to say...
They trade all UFA before the deadline instead of signing them, and they even manage to lose Shayne Corson for nothing... (well, this one I can take..)
The worst one is Recchi, I still don't get why they didn't sign him back instead of letting him go to Philly.. this way the Flyers have Recchi AND LeClair when we play against them..
You can add Petrov to that list, as well as Savage...

Um no!
They didnt sign them cause they were probably going to leave anyways. Why keep Recchi on a team that is going no where then lose him for nothgin

Houle offered Recchi $4.5 M year deal but recchi wanted $5.5 M houle didn't bite as he also got more year of contract in philly, recchi had barely scored 11 goals that year many of them empty netter, I was surprised we got talented Zubrus for fading talent, I'm happy we made that trade now Philly has old recchi, and Leclair with bad back i say keep them, as they make too much money for what they bring.
Ya we lost corson because he was supposed to be paid $4.2 M in his option year too much for third liner at best, but we got compensatory pick which we traded for Quintal who signed cheap contract for $1.7 M per year, now tell me who do you want cheap Quintal Useful Quntal or expensive finished up corson.
Petrov was released by Nashvill and he's free agent as of now, but main reason we didn't sign him back is because of his size we can't have all our top forwards under size of six feet right!!!
And about Savage after this happened Coyotes are paying him too much money I think $3.5 M per year and he hasn't done anything in that organization, they would get rid of him in second if they could.
You forgot Rucinsky he's been scrambling to stay in NHl ever since we traded him, actually other then that horrible old trade that sent leclair, desjardin for recchi I am very happy we got rid of old worthless talent, WE don't need to pick Toronto way to get cup in Montreal it will never happen, hope we stick to plan and unload more old dead wood.
Are you saying the Habs didn't trade Recchi to save money? Weinrich? Damphousse?
Recchi & Damphousse were traded while the Habs were still owned by Molson. This happened when the company had decided that the Habs were only one of many entertainment assets, and weren't worth a major investment of capital.
The ownership is very different now...
Weinrich had announced he planned to walk as a UFA at the end of the season...

I wouldn't want to finish last this year, because I think it would have a negative impact on all the kids that get to play this year, and may harm their development.
As much as I think Ovechkin could help this team, I wouldn't want 2 or maybe even 3 prospects to never reach full potential because of it.

I don`t think that any of our prospects would be so crushed by a last place finish that they would never develop or reach there full potential. I`d like to have Ovechkin like most people on this board....I don`t want montreal to bomb the season to get him tho. I don`t think there is much of a chance of Montreal finishing last if anything they`ll probably pick in the top 10 again this year. It`s really all up to how theo plays. But anyway if they did finish in last I don`t think our prospects would be affected by it. Being in loosing situations dosn`t seem to affect other teams better prospects why would it affect ours?

I agree with you, but it should be said that being in a losing situation in Montreal is a lot worse than being in a losing situation anywhere else. I think if we finish last we'll have gone through at least 4 different coaches by the end of the season!

It sucks but that`s true....Hopefully if Montreal has a terrible season the Media and the fans will take it easier on our younger guys than they do on someone like Brisebois. But after the Gainey/Brisebois/Booing fans incident....maybe people will think twice before criticizing the Habs players. One can hope
