As if junior numbers matter for a now 27 year old who has been in the league for seven seasons.

Someone better get him Angelo Esposito's #.

Why not Mario Bliznak? He has a Memorial Cup, even scored a clutch goal in the final.

Clutterbuck for Niederreiter and 2.75m/4 years... what a ridiculous overpayment for a guy that is a marginal 3rd liner. Then again, no crazier than Boyd Gordon getting $3m.

Goes to show if you have a certain type of player that teams covet, you can get excellent value in trade. It worked against Fletcher when he wanted Barker, and for him when Snow wanted Clutterbuck. Too bad the Canucks didn't have a similar asset they could have dealt for value.

I'm not disagreeing that the trade value was way off, but what makes Clutterbuck a marginal 3rd liner?

It's not as if he's an older player either. $2.75m with bought UFA years seems fair to me. I mean it's not a steal like a Hansen or anything like that, but it's obviously a Bozak-Kessel like chemistry thing, being that Clutterbuck and Tavares go way back.

Seems to be able to hold his own, but I haven't looked at the advanced stats.

Well, he's the type of 3rd liner that a contender wouldn't want, basically. That's why I consider him marginal. He's a significant downgrade on Hansen in every area except goal scoring and hitting, and even then you have to consider that he gets quite a bit of his goals and points on the PP. He has also never played shutdown minutes.

Maybe he's someone you can put on the top line and he'll have chemistry with Tavares but that's really the only scenario where I can see him living up to that contract. On a team like the Canucks, I wouldn't want him anywhere other than the 4th line.

From reading some posts, I think Islander fans are expecting a bit too much from Clutterbuck. He's never had to do the defensive heavy lifting like Cooke has, yet they are saying he's a far more effective player than Cooke. Don't get it to be honest.

Some are expect him to be a burgeoning power forward. I don't think they watched Wild games and just saw some YT highlight videos. I was hoping for a good offseason by Snow but he re-signed Nabokov and traded Niederreiter for Clutterbuck + the re-signing. Ugh.

Really bad asset management by the Islanders. Limited bottom-6 forward who throws a lot of hits but is otherwise limited for a guy they picked in the top five - but possibly ruined due to their horrendous handling of his development - only three years ago. Yggh.

If Nino is any good he'll bounce back. He might be a year behind but that shouldn't stop him. Busts bust, quality bounces back.

The reason NYI dumped him is he was being a cancer that wanted prime ice time not AHL. Compare that to our recent prospect that got dumped for similar agitating reasons.

Exactly. Further proves the point it was poor asset management all around by Wang and crew.

Kept him in the NHL for his cap hit ie. playing 5 mins in the NHL isn't better for a prospect than 25 mins in the WHL. I don't care what anybody says.

Niño will bounce back. Just glad Minny isn't divisional anymore. He's a pain to play against.

clutterbuck's hitting 'stats' are a farce

will be interesting to see how many less 'hits' he'll make this year on long island with different home ice statisticians

Paul Hamilton Joins Sports Talk Saturday

If you skip ahead to about 20:15 you'll hear this guy talk about Hodgson re-signing and his agent.

He calls Ritch Winter, Cody's Agent, one of the biggest morons walking the face of the earth or something along those lines. He says Winter caused Hasek's career chaos and could do (has done?) the same for Hodgson.

If it's the same people counting Matt Martin's hits, I don't think it'll be a big difference.

Bingo. It was bad asset management from the start with the Islanders and Nino.

They rushed him to the NHL and only kept him there playing garbage minutes on an awful team because his cap hit kept the team above the cap floor and they're surprised he got surly and wanted a trade, which he eventually got, to a team that may give him a chance to grow into an NHL forward.

Absolutely ridiculous way to develop NHL talent.

Remember that Phoenix game this year where their statisticians gave them like 20 hits to our like 5 in the first period?

And here I thought Isles fans were telling us their management wasn't dealing future top liners for scraps anymore... all of a sudden Luongo for Niederreiter doesn't sound so bad anymore does it?
